- ItemBestuurstyle in die openbare en privaatsektor van die Suid-Afrikaanse volkshuishouding(AOSIS OpenJournal, 1991-06) De Villiers, W. S.; Raubenheimer, I Van W.Management styles in the public and private sector of the South African economy. A questionnaire, consisting of various biographical items and a number of measuring instruments was used to determine whether a difference in management style between organizations in the public and private sector exists. A marked resemblance between the biographical profiles of managers in the public and private sectors was found. No statistically significant difference was found in people orientation in the two sectors. Managers in the private sector however, were inclined to be more authoritarian. To the degree that this phenomenon manifests itself in managerial style, a difference in the management styles of managers in the public and private sectors does exist.
- ItemDie meting van die gelyktydige hantering van teenstrydige en dubbelsinnige inligting as kritieke eienskap in 'n verskeidenheid van beroepe(AOSIS OpenJournal, 1983-11) De Villiers, W. S.; Raubenheimer, L. Van WykSince very little is known about how to deal with conflicting and ambiguous information as a work attribute an attempt was made to define this particular construct and subject it to empirical research. An instrument (the in basket exercise) was developed to measure employees' efficiency in dealing with conflicting and ambiguous information. This instrument together with instruments for measuring a number of related traits were administered to 468 subjects. It was determined that the capacity to deal with conflicting and ambiguous information has a certain relationship with intelligence and sensory cognitive judgement. No relationship could be found with certain personality traits. In all probability a separate construct is indicated by this research.

- Item'n Ondersoek na die potensiaal-bepaling van werknemers in die landbousektor(AOSIS OpenJournal, 1989-05) Augustyn, J. C. D.; De Villiers, W. S.; Raubenheimer, I. van W.An investigation into determining the potential of workers in the agricultural sector. Industrial Psychological principles and concepts are not being applied extensively in the agricultural sector. Against this background an attempt was made to scientifically identify potential and predict job performance amongst farm labourers. Using the PAQ method of job analysis, critical attributes were identified and a satisfactorily valid battery of tests was developed. The results of this study underlines the importance of the identification of the potential of farm labourers as a first step in the personnel management process. It also serves as a source of information that could be used by farmers for counselling purposes.

- ItemThe personality profile of a successful sales representative in the liquor industry(AOSIS OpenJournals, 1988-05) Augustyn, J. C. D.; De Villiers, W. S.From a study of the relevant literature it is clear that in general characteristics of sales representatives, and their personality profile in particular, have not been clearly identified. The objective of this study was to seek clarification of this issue. Two instruments were used in the investigation; namely, the South African Personality Questionnaire and the Thurstone Temperament Schedule. These instruments were administered to 45 sales representatives in the liquor industry and it was established that successful and less successful sales representatives could be statistically differentiated in terms of personality profile.
- ItemPersoneelbestuur as toepassingsgebied van die bedryfsielkunde met verwysing na die implikasies wat dit inhou vir die arbeidsituasie in Suid-Afrika(AOSIS OpenJournals, 1976-11) De Villiers, W. S.Industrial Psychology is a relatively young discipline. In recent years, however, it has been characterised by accelerated development and today covers various areas of application. The most rapid progress in this respect was perhaps experienced in the field of personnel management. Personnel management can be defined as the planning, organising, directing and controlling of the procurement, development, compensation, integration and maintenance of people for the purpose of contributing to organisational goals. In the past some personnel departments rendered merely screening services which included little more than preliminary interviews of applicants, wage and salary administration and other routine administrative work. Personnel management has, however, undergone drastic changes in which the trend has been clearly towards broader and more important assignments. From narrowly prescribed chores, its responsibilities have grown wider and deeper. The personnel manager of the modern organisation is undisputably a participant in top management, where he provides leadership in developing policies and programmes for manpower management.
- ItemThe relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance in a call centre environment(AOSIS OpenJournals, 2004-10) Nel, H.; De Villiers, W. S.The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance in a call centre environment. The sample comprised 135 call centre agents who worked in client services, sales and administrative environments in a life insurance company. The “Emotional Competency Inventory” that was completed by team leaders, was used as a measuring instrument and an overall job performance rating for each participant was provided by the participating organisation. Results show a statistically significant and positive correlation between emotional intelligence and job performance in the call centre environment. The strongest correlation with performance in the total call centre environment occurred in the cluster of selfmanagement and the emotional competency of self-confidence. It was further established that the combination of the emotional competencies emotional self-awareness, trustworthiness, self-confidence and influence explains the greatest degree of variance in job performance in the call centre environment as a whole.
