- Item2-D and 3-D proximal remote sensing for yield estimation in a Shiraz vineyard(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2020-03) Hacking, Christopher James; Poblete-Echeverria, Carlos; Poona, Nitesh; Stellenbosch University. Dept. of Geography and Environmental Studies.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Precision viticulture aims to minimise production input expenses through the efficient management of vineyards, yielding the desired quantity and quality, while reducing the environmental footprint associated with modern farming. Precision viticulture practices aim to manage the inherent spatial variability in vineyards. Estimating vineyard yield provides insight into this process, enabling informed managerial decisions regarding production inputs. At the same time, yield information is important to the winery, as it facilitates logistical planning for harvest. Traditional yield estimation methods are destructive by nature and require in-situ sampling, which is labour-intensive and time-consuming. Proximal remote sensing (PRS) presents a suitable alternative for estimating yielding a non-destructive manner. PRS employs terrestrial proximal sensors for data acquisition that can be combined with computer vision (CV) techniques to process and analyse the data, generating the estimated yield for the vineyard. This research intends to investigate 2-dimensional (2-D) and 3-dimensional (3-D) PRS and related CV techniques for estimating yield in a vertically shoot position (VSP) trellised Shiraz vineyard. This research is presented as two components. The first component evaluates 2-D and 3-D methodologies for estimating yielding a vineyard. Three experiments are presented at bunch-and plant-level, incorporating both laboratory and in-situ experimental conditions. Under laboratory conditions (bunch-level only), the 2-D methodology achieved an r2 of 0.889, while the 3-D methodology achieved a higher r2 of 0.950. Both methodologies demonstrate the potential of PRS and associated CV techniques for estimating yield. The in-situ plant-level results favoured the 2-D methodology (fullcanopy (FC): r2= 0.779; leaf removal (LR): r2= 0.877) over the 3-D methodology (FC: r2= 0.487; LR: r2= 0.623). The general performance of the 2-D methodology was superior, and thus implemented in the subsequent component. The two set out to determine the ideal phenological stage for estimating yield. The 2-D methodology was employed with slight improvements and multitemporal digital imagery were acquired on a weekly basis for 12 weeks; culminating in a final acquisition two days prior to harvest. This component also successfully implemented image segmentation using an unsupervised k-means clustering (KMC) technique, an improvement to the colour thresholding (CT) technique implemented in component one. The ideal phenological stage was approximately two weeks prior to harvest (final stages of berry ripening), which achieved a global (bunch-level: 50 bunches) r2of 0.790 for estimating yield. This research successfully implements 2-D and 3-D PRS and CV techniques for estimating yield in a Shiraz vineyard, and thereby accomplishes the aim of this research. The research demonstrates the suitability of the methodologies–specifically the 2-D methodology, which demonstrated superior performance (simple data acquisition and analysis with competitive results). Future research could refine the presented methodologies for operational use.
- ItemThe 2003 Cricket World Cup : implications for identity formation and democratization prospects for Zimbabwe(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2004-03) Van der Merwe, Justin Daniel Sean; Van der Westhuizen, Janis; Stellenbosch University. Dept. of Political Science.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There can be little doubt about the ability of major international sporting events to capture the aspirations and hopes of nations. These events have an uncanny ability of seemingly effortlessly doing what a hundred speeches and mass rallies by politicians could only hope to achieve. Therefore, it is no surprise that they are commonly understood to be able to bring nations and people together and provide a focus for national identity and unity. The 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa is an obvious proponent of such a claim, whereby South Africa was emerging from a long and arduous political transition and needed something more than going to the polling booths to unite the nation. Major international sporting events are also said to be able to provide a catalyst or incentive for democratization and human rights enhancement in authoritarian or semi-authoritarian regimes. The 1988 Olympics in South Korea is a landmark of such claims whereby the South Korean government was said to bow to the democratizing pressures exerted on it due to its hosting of the event. Many have argued that China’s hosting of the Olympics in 2008 will have a similar effect. However, equally potent, major international sporting events can have various unintended consequences in terms of identity formation, democratization prospects and human rights for the host nations. An analysis of South Africa and Zimbabwe’s co-hosting of the 2003 Cricket World Cup demonstrates this point. The outcomes of the study suggest that whilst it is normally the intention for the host nations to use the games to bring nations and people together, the Cricket World Cup opened up a rift between races, both within the race contours of the cricket playing Commonwealth world and within South Africa's domestic politics. It was also established that much like the 1995 Rugby World Cup had sought to reconcile blacks and whites domestically under the “Rainbow Nation” during Mandela's presidency, the 2003 Cricket World Cup, with its more regional focus and under Mbeki’s presidency, presented an excellent opportunity for transnational reconciliation between Africa and the Anglo-Saxon world. However, the 2003 Cricket World Cup, as a project in racial reconciliation, was essentially a failure. This was predominantly due to the choice by South Africa of Zimbabwe as co-host and due to the shift of South Africa's national identity from that of the “Rainbow Nation” under Mandela, to that of “Africanism” under Mbeki. President Mbeki’s drive towards “Africanism” proved divisive both transnationally and domestically. Symbolically, the Cricket World Cup, when compared with the 1995 Rugby World Cup, had served to highlight the decline of the “Rainbow Nation”. Zimbabwe's co-hosting of the event had served to further entrench the authoritarian regime. Instead of the regime opening up due to its co-hosting of the event, a broad clampdown on civil and political liberties was experienced. The Zimbabwean government felt the need to tighten its grip during the lead up to the event and throughout the tournament itself. The aim was to project a sanitized view of Zimbabwe to the rest of the world. Thus, the event presented an opportunity for the government to shore up its credibility and produce political propaganda. South Africa’s stance of “quiet diplomacy” also indirectly helped to further entrench the regime through the World Cup. Zimbabwe's co-hosting also impacted negatively on the opposition, the MDC. In addition to this, the various pressures which major events are said to exert on a host nation to reform politically and which result from boycott campaigns, pressure from the media, stimulation of civil society and protests, were not very effective in enhancing democratization prospects and human rights in Zimbabwe. This study reaches the overall conclusion that the claims that major events bring nations and people together and provide a catalyst or incentive for democratization and human rights enhancement in authoritarian regimes, need further revision. South Africa and Zimbabwe's co-hosting of the event did indeed have unintended consequences. Policy implications are also assessed. Future areas for research are also identified.
- ItemThe 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance : trying to make sense of the late ratification of the African Charter and non-implementation of its compliance mechanism(Sage, 2019) Engel, UlfIn principle, the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) could be a powerful instrument to bring the African Governance Architecture to life and to help ensure that its universal values, including respect for human rights and the rule of law, are implemented across all African Union member states. Yet how serious in reality are the latter on this question? Ratification of the African Charter has taken five years and, as of late 2019, the implementation of its compliance mechanism is still pending. This article asks how these empirical puzzles can be best addressed. In the absence of robust data on member states’ preferences and with a view to developing hypotheses for further research, this article inductively interrogates how data on the various regimes’ political liberties may or may not relate to the ratification of the African Charter and the implementation of the ACDEG compliance mechanism.
- ItemA 21st century scramble : South Africa, China and the Rare Earth Metals Industry(Stellenbosch University. Centre for Chinese Studies, 2012-03) Jepson, Nicholas; Grimm, Sven; McDonald, MatthewThe paper analyses the peculiar structure of the rare earth elements (REE) industry, a sector dominated by China, and the global implications of current upheavals within the sector, especially as they concern South Africa’s (re)emerging rare earths production. REEs are a hitherto obscure group of metals that have now assumed global significance. They are especially critical to modern high-strength magnets and constitute vital inputs for a growing range of mass consumer, ‘green’ technology and military applications. It is important to understand that REEs altogether comprise 17 different metals which, although found together in various combinations, differ in relative abundance and breadth of possible applications. There are therefore large variations in prices and criticality of supply between the different elements. The Chinese rare earths industry has secured a 97% share of upstream production by means of aggressive pricing, backed by state support and technology transfer. Beijing is now attempting to consolidate the industry, crack down on illegal mining and restrict and enforce export and production quotas. Official explanations stress renewed concern for environmental issues and the protection of scarce resources from over-exploitation. Also significant, however, is a policy of deliberately using export restrictions to leverage non-Chinese prices, in order to induce foreign downstream producers to relocate production to China. This process is beginning; although there are also two other forms of international response. First, there is demand destruction either through increased efficiency in REE usage, substitution or recycling of rare earths. Secondly – and most widely known – are attempts to restart REE supply chains outside China. South Africa is in the forefront of these efforts through two, globally significant, extractive projects. The refurbished Steenkampskraal thorium and REE mine may be the first non-Chinese new producer to come online, in 2012–2013. The Zandkopsdrift development in Northern Cape is less advanced, but is among the largest prospective new REE mines. Both are joint ventures between Western junior mining companies and East Asian parastatals, respectively from China and Korea. Significant environmental risks seem inherent in the extraction and separation of REEs, especially from thorium waste, although apparently this has not reached the public consciousness in the areas immediately around the South African mines. If these dangers can be avoided or minimised, the new rare earths mines could make a small but significant positive developmental impact at local as well as national level.

Dept. of Afrikaans and Dutch.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ’n Groot hoeveelheid navorsing is die afgelope paar dekades gedoen oor aanleerderwoordeboeke as tipologiese woordeboekonderafdeling. Ondanks al hierdie navorsing is die rol van aanleerderwoordeboeke in tersiêre taalleer met nultaalsprekers as teikengroep nog nie naastenby na behore ondersoek nie. Navorsing toon dat ’n goed gekose woordeboek, naas die opvoedkundige, ’n belangrike hulpmiddel is om die taalverwerwingsproses te verryk. Daar bestaan tans nie ’n eentalige of tweetalige aanleerderwoordeboek wat spesifiek gerig is op nultaalsprekers wat Afrikaans op tersiêre vlak aanleer nie. Taalverwerwingsdosente en taalfasiliteerders moet dus die gaping ten beste probeer vul deur woordeboeke soos Pharos se Aanleerderswoordeboek vir skole/Learner’s dictionary for schools en Longman-HAT se Afrikaans Dictionary and Grammar for English speakers vir hierdie aanleerders voor te skryf. Die hoofdoelwitte van hierdie studie kan soos volg opgesom word: om die mate te meet waarin hierdie “kompenserende” woordeboeke die leksikografiese behoeftes van nultaalsprekers op tersiêre vlak bevredig, om terugvoer van die teikengebruikers self te kry en om voorstelle te maak vir die moontlike samestelling van ’n aanleerderwoordeboek vir nultaalsprekers wat Afrikaans as derde of verdere taal op universiteitsvlak aanleer. Die studie is aanvanklik uitgevoer met die Funksieteorie as uitgangspunt, maar ook later gekombineer met die Algemene Teorie van Leksikografie, byvoorbeeld Wiegand (1998), as raamwerk. Taalverwerwingskursusse verskil van universiteit tot universiteit en dus is slegs die algemene en belangrikste leksikografiese behoeftes van hierdie nultaalsprekers bepaal. Die rede vir die analisering van hierdie spesifieke twee woordeboeke is omdat dit onderskeidelik voorgeskryf word by die Universiteit van Stellenbosch en die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit. Die mate waarin ’n spesifieke woordeboek voldoen aan die bevrediging van ’n sekere teikengroep se leksikografiese behoeftes word nie slegs deur die leksikograaf bepaal nie, maar ook deur die teikengebruiker. Die huidige woordeboekkultuur is vasgestel deur die Nasionale Kurrikulum- en Assesseringsbeleidsverklaring (NKAV), wat tans in die Suid-Afrikaanse skoolsisteem gevolg word, onder die vergrootglas te bring. Op grond hiervan word voorstelle vir formele woordeboekonderrig op universiteitsvlak gemaak, wat beide algemene en spesifieke woordeboekonderrig insluit.
- ItemDie aanloop tot en stigting van Orania as groeipunt vir 'n Afrikaner-volkstaat(Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2007-03) Pienaar, Terisa; Visser, Wessel P.; University of Stellenbosch. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of History.Throughout the history of South Africa, the Afrikaners have been described as a "strange society". Calvinism was a key to their lifestyle and ideology and they saw themselves as God's special instruments. Their political philosophy of separate development was to a certain extent, revolutionary and was known as "apartheid". This was an attempt to remake a society according to a socio-political ideal which was rooted in the concept of safety in power. This thesis investigates the Afrikaners with regard to their primal ancestors, the origin of their identity, their identity during the reign of the NP government and their identity in the post apartheid South Africa. Discrepancies concerning Afrikaner identity during this time are also investigated. In this thesis special emphasis is placed on the right-wing actions of the Afrikaners, their political development from the time of separation from the NP which arose from the conviction that the leaders of this party were deviating from the moral and political prescriptions of their predecessors, their ideals and visions of freedom. The right-wing tends to qualify the term “nationalism” with the term “Christian” and they therefore believe that their nationhood is widely ordained. Culture, for the right-wing means an inclusive concept which covers every aspect of their lives. Language, i.e. Afrikaans, is seen as the verbal and written expression of their national culture. This study is directed towards the right wing of Afrikaners' quest for a "volkstaat" (state nation) and specifically the foundation of Orania in the Northern Cape and investigates whether it is a viable option for Afrikaners in general to live. The right-wingers believe that the only feasible constitutional option for peace in South Africa lies in partition The origin of the volkstaat idea , the early thoughts and the development of this concept are also investigated as well as the different models and role players. The main aim of this thesis is to investigate the success of Orania as a possible growing point of a "volkstaat" for Afrikaners. The early stages in the development of this small town e.g. the purchase, their efforts in achieving autonomy, their constitutional rights, their efforts in developing their community as well as their image to the outside world are investigated. During a visit to Orania in 2005 questionnaires were handed out to residents in order to compose a social profile and to investigate domicile statistics as well as views on Afrikaner identity. Ultimately this thesis indicates that although Orania functions successfully in most instances the possibility of it serving as a growing point of a “volkstaat” needs a much larger effort and larger support from other Afrikaners.
- Item’n Aanlyn Afrikaanse akademiese redigeerwoordeboek : die bruikbaarheid van ’n prototipe(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2021-03) Blom, Maret; Lourens, Amanda; Feinauer, Ilse; Stellenbosch University. Dept. of Afrikaans and Dutch.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The academic writing skills and research skills of postgraduate students at higher education institutions in the South African context are inadequate (Van Aswegen 2007: 1141), and therefore there is a growing demand for the services of editors of specifically academic texts. In a previous study conducted by me I looked in depth at the reference sources (style guides or standardisation sources) the editors of specifically Afrikaans academic texts use to ensure consistency in academic texts. After researching various Afrikaans reference works and doing an empirical study where questionnaires were given to freelance editors to determine their needs and problems in terms of current dictionaries, I foundthat there is a need for an Afrikaans dictionary for academic editing purposes in the field of academic editing. The current Afrikaans dictionaries and style guides are outdated and only parts thereof are useful for the academic editor.Editors of Afrikaans academic texts would therefore benefit from an Afrikaans dictionary that is especially aimed at theirneeds. Fuertes-Olivera and Tarp’s (2014) function theory for specialised online dictionaries was used to set up a model for an Afrikaans online dictionary for academic editing purposes, with the hope that this model wouldbe usefulin further effortsto compile such a dictionary. Fuertes-Olivera and Tarp (2014:192) divide the design, compilation and updating of a specialised online dictionary into three phases, namely the pre-compilation phase, the compilation phase and the post-compilation phase. Fuertes-Olivera and Tarp’s (2014:192) pre-compilation and compilation phases wereused to determine the online dictionary’s functions and data types.A homepage, five articles of examples from different disciplines and a mini user guide were then drafted. The Afrikaans dictionary for academic editing purposes that will eventually be compiled on the basis of thismodel will attempt to fulfil the role of a style guide and standardisation source. The proposed dictionarywill deal with the following issues: correct wordusage;writing or spelling rules that the academic editor will find useful;information about language use in specific subject fields;and information on academic editing as specialisation area. Links to other general and specialised dictionaries (including subject field dictionaries)will also be provided. The problem, however, is that the post-compilation phase of the model for an Afrikaans online dictionary for academic editing purposes has notbeen implemented and the model has therefore not been empirically tested. In an attempt to eliminate usability problems at an early stage in the compilation of the online dictionary for academic editingpurposes, a usability study istherefore carried out. The rationale for executingthe post-compilation phase in this paper and testingthe usability of the model’s data presentation and data description is based on Heid (2011), Kwary (2013) and Du Plessis’s (2017) statement. They aver that modernlexicographic products will satisfy their users’ needs if thosedictionaries take the user’s consulting procedures, as well as their experience and interaction with the device and software into consideration. A multidisciplinary study making use of interaction between editing, specialised lexicography, usability studies and research methods wasconducted as follows:Firstly, Blom’s model(2018) for an online dictionary for academic editing purposes wasused to set up a prototype. This prototype was based on editors’ expectations of the Afrikaans online dictionary as determined in a pre-test questionnaire. Secondly, the effectivenessand,thirdly, user satisfaction of this prototype wereevaluated by means of editing tests that determinedthe problems that academic editors hadwith the prototype’s data presentation and data description. After the tests werecompleted, quantitative data in terms of errors and task accuracy werecollected from the performance data.Qualitative data werecollected from the preference data regardingthe users’ experience while using the prototype. Guidelines for the further improvement of the Afrikaans online dictionary for academic editing purposes werethen drafted;these guidelines can be used in further studies to refine and compose this dictionary.

Dept. of Psychology.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa is one of the countries with the highest HIV prevalence rates worldwide and younger age groups are often disproportionately affected. Knowledge of HIV status is regarded as an important prevention strategy for reducing HIV transmission and infection and it is viewed as a means to access antiretroviral therapy. Routine HIV Counseling and Testing (RCT) can significantly increase knowledge of HIV status, but it is unclear whether RCT will be accepted if offered. The aim of this study was to determine whether the main dimensions of the Health Belief Model (HBM) namely, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits and perceived barriers can predict acceptance of RCT. A second objective of the study was to determine if the variable of the HBM, namely cue’s to action could significantly contribute to predicting acceptability of RCT. A sample of 1113 students at the University of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape Province of South Africa completed a structured questionnaire, measuring the acceptability of RCT. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data and it was found that the main dimensions of the HBM could explain 25.1% of the variance in acceptance of RCT. It was however found that the variable perceived severity did not make a significant individual contribution to predicting acceptability of RCT. The addition of the variable cues to action also did not make a significant individual contribution to the prediction of RCT. It was therefore found that the HBM could partially, but not in its entirety, predict acceptability of RCT among the student population. Interventions should therefore aim to increase perceived benefits of RCT, reduce perceived barriers to RCT and facilitate correct personal risk assessment in order to increase perceived susceptibility.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Music.The piano teacher faces an enormous task as educator in initial educational practice. The child must receive clear directives in terms of piano technique, sight reading skills, aural training, music theory and general music history. These aspects are accepted as providing the basic principles for effective tuition for beginners. Efficient guidance can be delivered only when the piano teacher has the necessary knowledge. In this study piano teachers who lack sufficient experience, knowledge and insight in the relevant knowledge, especially concerning piano technique, are considered to be underqualified.

Dept. of History.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study pictorial Africana are used to sketch a socio-historical image of certain aspects of Wellington (previously known as Waggonmakers Valley) during the period 1657 to 1900. Together with written sources such as letters, diaries and travel diaries, the pictorial sources (in this case paintings, pictures and maps) are considered primary sources. Although the inhabitants of Waggonmakers Valley and later Wellington clearly developed an own identity, Wellington cannot be viewed in isolation. The town and region are placed in the broader context of the Drakenstein Valley and the Western Cape. The establishment and development of the town are placed within the prevalent political and economic climate of that time. Historical highlights of the town's history are given in short. A list of artists, pictorial works and place of conservation where these pictorial works are being conserved was compiled. It was attempted to determine the artists' connection with the Drakenstein Valley, Waggonmakers Valley and Wellington in each discussion. In the discussion of the territory (bodem) the Waggonmakers Valley is placed in the context of the Drakenstein Valley. In this discussion the discovery and settlement of the valley are considered, as well as the naming of the Drakenstein Valley, Waggonmakers Valley and Wellington. The appearance of the valley, mountains, hills, as well as the vegetation, animal life and bird life are discussed. The influence of the Berg River and other rivers on the inhabitants' lives is included in the discussion, as well as relevant folk-tales and popular beliefs. Where applicable, various uses for plants (e.g. medicinal) in these people's daily lives are discussed. In the discussion of the church the following aspects are considered: the beginning of missionary work in the Waggonmakers Valley, the secession of the church and the subsequent establishment of Wellington, as well as some religious aspects such as the "Wederdoper" Sect and the big revival of 1860. Festivals, sports and recreation depict the social activities of the Wellington people up to the end of the nineteenth century. In the discussion of the architecture, aspects such as political, economic and social influences on building style as well as building materials and building methods were taken into account. To illustrate: the opening of the Wellington railway line and the opening of Bainskloof Pass influenced the architecture of the town and region. Influencing factors on the lay-out of the town as well as the meaning of BainskloofPass for Wellington were considered.

Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. Dept. of Music.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South African education is currently moving in a new direction that is aimed at representing all the cultures of the country. Music education is grouped as part of the Arts and Culture learning area of Curriculum 2005 and the implication is that instrumental music teaching is being marginalized at the expense of general music teaching. In the past these two were regarded as separate subjects that each had its own dedicated syllabus. This thesis is geared toward the preservation of instrumental music teaching (in this case piano) as part of the Arts and Culture learning area of Curriculum 2005 by means of a complementary teaching program whereby general music teaching and instrumental music teaching can be taught in conjunction with each other. This approach is based on Gane (1996) who suggests activities and approaches to music education that can support the co-operation between these two areas of music teaching. This thesis is an exploratory study to determine if co-operation between prescribed music curricula and the suggestions for music activities and approaches as proposed by Gane (1996), have the potential to bridge the gap between general music teaching and instrumental music teaching. At the onset of this study it was not to test a predetermined hypothesis, but rather to establish the possibility of a complementary teaching model for music teaching. This research project was done according to the qualitative research methodology as it was done it was done in a social setting. This research project was done over a period of six months with a group of ten learners whose progress ranged from beginner to grade 2 level. A variety of music compositions was selected and applied in the practice of the music lesson to demonstrate the application of the music activities as suggested by Gane (1996). The ultimate goal of the use of the music compositions was to indicate how prescribed and additional music can be explored to optimize the learners' knowledge from the two fields of music learning. The following syllabi were used for this thesis: the British National Curriculum (1995), as well as these South African syllabi: Curriculum for Extra-Curricular Music - piano (1993), the Interim Syllabus for Classmusic (1995), and Curriculum 2005 (1997). The reasons for the focus on these specific syllabi in this research project are as follows: firstly the British National Curriculum serves as framework for Gane's (1996) article "Instrumental performance and the National Curriculum: a possible partnership?" and this forms the foundation for this thesis; secondly the Curriculum for Extra-Curricular music (piano) deals with instrumental music teaching and the Interim Syllabus for Classmusic deals with general music teaching and these are the two aspects of music teaching in South Africa which this thesis aim to bring together; and lastly the Curriculum 2005 (1997) is the curriculum whereby education is currently being practiced in South Africa. The most important finding of this study is that the proposed teaching method is workable for music education if certain conditions as is discussed in chapter 4 are in place. It has also been found that because this is an exploratory study, there is room for more empirical research in this regard. In conclusion it can be said that since this study revealed the possibility for an exploratory teaching method for music teaching, this teaching method does have merit.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Drama.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the contemporary Afrikaans cabaret and the theatrical forms related to it. As background to the study and to determine the original nature of cabaret, I have examined the European origin of the Afrikaans cabaret. Afrikaans cabaret is discussed further by looking at the nature of the original Afrikaans cabaret in the 1980’s. As a constantly evolving art form, the Afrikaans cabaret has undergone multiple changes since its beginning in the 1980’s and because of this the nature of the contemporary Afrikaans cabaret is discussed through the use of the comedy sub-genres: stand-up comedy, one man comedy and sketch comedy. These comedy sub-genres add to the entertainment value of the cabaret and are discussed through the comic elements that can be used in contemporary Afrikaans cabaret. The function of Afrikaans cabaret as social commentator is also examined by placing it against contemporary Afrikaans rock music. The rock movements referred to in this study, which are largely related to socio-political commentary, are the 1980’s Voëlvry-tour as well as the contemporary Afrikaans rock group Fokofpolisiekar. As conclusion the study finds that cabaret is allusive in nature, but that social criticism is the core element. It seems, however, that the contemporary Afrikaans cabaret is more focussed on entertainment without social commentary and that this contemporary function is influenced by numerous factors.

Dept. of Modern Foreign Languages.Suggestopedia, as an innovative method of teaching, inter alia, second and foreign languages, has reportedly achieved exceptional results. With the development of this multimedia program it was decided to base the program on suggestopedic principles. In this thesis, I discussed the theory of adult second language acquisition, cognitive learning theory, constructivist learning theory and the consequences these theories have on language teaching. The overview of literature incorporates a description and analysis of Suggestopedia and looks at Suggestopedia from the following perspectives: • a description of suggestion • a description of suggestology • the basic premises of Suggestopedia • the purpose of Suggestopedia • the principles of Suggestopedia • the suggestopedic cycle • the suggestopedic text • the classroom module • the computer program. The multimedia computer program was developed to enhance the classroom module of the first year students of German at the university. In this thesis, I describe the interface and design of this program in terms of colour, incorporating colour theory, the name of the program, the overall design and the structure of each scene.

Dept. of Visual Arts.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates art jewellery as social communicator and questions the way in which the Fourth Age female individual is perceived. The argument of this thesis will be presented in conjunction with visual imagery of the series of pieces that have been created. Through my art practice, I aim to destabilise abject, frail bodies as a parallel for identity in the fourth age. Through the process of material investigation and making it becomes evident that the aged body is delicate and fragile, yet beneath the surface that is perceived as decay lies a vast pool of beauty, experience and strength that is overlooked. This thesis, along with my practical body of work acts as the catalyst to forming new perspectives and perceptions surrounding the fourth age female body and identity.

Dept. of Afrikaans and Dutch.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In fulfilment of the degree of Magister in Creative Writing, a mini-thesis is presented with the title, “Abjeksie in MS Burger se Bloedfamilie (2012)” (“Abjection in MS Burger’s Bloedfamilie (Blood Family)”). This research topic was decided upon during the writing of Seuns wat weet (Boys who know), a collection of short stories in which the abject play a prominent role. The mini-thesis points out the close interplay between the individual stories in MS Burger’s Bloedfamilie, which not only creates unity in the collection, but also places the text within the genre of the short story cycle. This genre is briefly defined, after which coherence markers such as the single protagonist, recurring characters, and continuous motifs are pointed out. However, it is the theme of abjection in Bloedfamilie that forms the focus of this mini-thesis. Julia Kristeva’s (1982) authoritative abject theory is outlined, followed by an exploration of the way in which abjection functions in the literature (Booker, 1991; Bousset, 2004; Arya, 2014). Kristeva’s view that abjection contributes to the process of creating identity is taken as point of departure for the textual analysis of Bloedfamilie where abjection is investigated on the basis of the following aspects: the bodily, the sexual, illness, rebellion against the mother, and violence. Apart from the fact that the abject portrayal of these aspects enables the first-person protagonist to establish her identity, it is also used in a moralistic manner to deploy the moral bankruptcy of orders and systems such as religion, family, and tradition, and to comment on issues such as gender inequality and rights. Seuns wat weet is a short story cycle in which Frikkie acts as first-person protagonist, with character development taking place from his childhood through to adulthood. Although the fifteen stories in the collection function individually, they form a greater coherence when they are read as part of a cycle, by showing Frikkie’s emotional development more clearly. The fifteen stories explore themes such as family, religion, culture, violence and (gay) sexuality, and how these aspects have a formative influence on Frikkie’s identity.

It is accompanied by a formal essay titled “Die abjekte held in Steppenwolf, Fight Club en A Whistling Woman” (“The abject hero in Steppenwolf, Fight Club and A Whistling Woman”). The essay researches the application of the abject hero in literary texts.
