J.; Breytenbach, H. S.In a double-blind randomized study on 16 healthy individuals, two groups of subjects (8 in each group) received either midazolam (Dormicum; Roche) 0,1 mg/kg or placebo intravenously for conscious sedation during oral surgical procedures. Oxygen saturation of the blood was measured at different stages. Ten minutes after administration of the drug, the percentage oxygen saturation was significantly lower (P<0.05) in the midazolam group than in the placebo group.
- ItemComparison of the permeability of vaginal mucosa and the wall of an experimental cyst(Academy of Science of South Africa, 2000) Thompson, I. O. C.; Van der Bijl, P.; Van Wyk, C. W.; Van Eyk, A. D.We used human vaginal mucosa to establish an experimental non-keratinized cyst in immunodeficient mice' and demonstrated that It could be used as a blotest mOdel.2 Because the histology of vaginal and buccal mucosa is broadly similar and the permeability of vaginal epithelium to watar and 17~-eatradiolls comparable to that of buccal mucosa,3,4 we concluded that these features Indicate that the cyst could also be used for Investigating the pathogenesis of various oral mucosal pathosas. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to compare the permeability of the epithelium lining the experimental cyst with that of fresh vaginal epithelium. Fresh vaginal mucosa was obtained from six postmenopausal women who had undergone reconstructive vaginal surgery. Seven tiHue disks were prepared from each of the vaginal specimens, mounted In flow-through diffusion cells and their permeability to tritiated water determined as previously described.3 Six artificial cysts were constructed from an additional six specimens, Implanted in nude mice and harvested after nine weeks. Seven tissue disks were Immediately prepared from each of the cysts, mounted In flow-through diffusion cells and their permeability to tritiated water determined. No statistical differences (P > 0.05) (Kruskal-Wallls test) could be demonstrated between the flux values of the vaginal and experimental cyst epithelium. The similar permeability characteristics of the vaginal and cyst epithelium to water lend support to the hypothesis that the experimental cyst developed from vaginal mucosa can be considered as a substitute model for studies on the buccal mucosa.
- ItemDiffusion of Diclofenac and Piroxicam from commercially available gels through human skin(2003) Van der Bijl, P.; Van Eyk, A. D.; Seifart, H. I.; De Jager, R.; Nel, C. M. M.No abstract available.
- ItemNon-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and physiotherapy - a selective review(AOSIS, 2002) Van der Bijl, P.; De Jager, R.; Nel, C. M. M.This paper presents a selective review on the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These drugs, which form the mainstay of treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal and rheumatic conditions, may facilitate the efficacy of and compliance with physiotherapy treatment. Their mechanisms of action, adverse effects, various routes of administration, eg systemic versus topical, and the role that these drugs may play in physiotherapy practice are discussed.
- ItemOligomeric substances in ampicillin preparations : a comparison of Penbritin, Famicillin and Petercillin(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1988) Van der Bijl, P.; Seifart, H. I.; Parkin, D. P.; Mattheyse, F. J.An investigation into the presence of potentially harmful oligomers in formulations of ampicillin for parenteral administration available in the RSA was undertaken by means of high-pressure liquid chromatography. Significant differences were found to exist between formulations.
- ItemPermeability of intestinal mucosa to crystalline and tabletted isoniazid (INH)(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 2003) Van der Bijl, P.; Seifart, H. I.; Van Eyk, A. D.When administered orally, isoniazid (INH), which continues to form the basis of most first-line standard antituberculosis regimens, reaches peak plasma concentrations of 3 - 5 μg/ml within 1 - 2 hours after ingestion of usual doses.1 Various tablet and slow-release matrix forms are available and these processed preparations are most often used clinically. However, various studies undertaken in our Department have shown crystalline INH to produce better blood levels within the first 2 hours after ingestion than the commonly used tabletted form.
- ItemPlasma cholinesterase levels during cardiopulmonary bypass : a report on 10 cases(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1987) Roelofse, J. A.; Van der Bijl, P.Plasma cholinesterase levels of 10 male patients were determined before, during and after cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. These levels dropped significantly below the pre-anaesthetic values after commencing anaesthesia. In 6 patients levels returned to pre-anaesthetic values before or on the 2nd post-operative day. This could not be explained in terms of enzymic biosynthesis alone, and it is suggested that postoperative fluid readjustments may play an important role in certain cases.
