H.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Afrikaans and Dutch.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The principal objective of the unilingual explanatory dictionary is to explain the meanings of lexical items. This is done, among other ways, by defining the collection of lexical items in the macro structure and by indicating the semantic relations in which the items stand. The explaining lexicographer is in fact charged with explicating semantic relations between lexical items. One such a semantic relation as a type of semantic opposition, namely gender opposition. A semantic relation of gender opposition exists between two lexical items which differ semantically in the first instance with regard to the semantic component [GENDER], e.g. man x woman and waiter x waitress. A pair of lexical items like this forms a gender opposition pair. Gender opposition is lexicalised in two ways in Afrikaans, namely lexically and morphologically.
