| dc.description.abstract | ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates he grammatical function and the semantic value of the Afrikaans prefix be-. After an investigation of the relevant literature, the basic concepts upon which this study are based, are defined. A new classification of affixes is suggested, according to which grammatical affixes (without meaning) and semantic affixes (with varying grammatical functions) are distinguished. An exposition of the criteria for collection of data is given. The grammatical study of the be- prefix is undertaken on the two levels. On the lexical categorical level a statistical analysis is made, and the function of be- in the determination of the lexical categories of its derivations, investigated. On the syntactical level the various effects which the affixation of be- to a word brings about in a sentence, are investigated. Traditional Chomskyan subject-object transformational grammar as well as Fillmore's case grammar is applied. | en_ZA |

'n Nuwe klassifikasie van affikse word voorgestel waarvolgens grammatikale affikse (sonder betekenis) en semantiese affikse (met uiteenlopende grammatikale funksies) van mekaat onderskei word. 'n Uiteensetting van die dataversamelingskriteria word gegee. 'n tweeledige grammatikale ondersoek word gedoen. Op kategoriale vlak word 'n analise van die funksie van be- en die statistiek aangaande die be-afleidings gemaak. Op sintaktiese vlak word die invloed van die aangehegte van be- by 'n werkwoord op die sin waarin dit verskyn, ondersoek.
