The central theme of the study comprised the use of the computer in calculating the cost of substantive items as negotiated by employers and trade unions at decentralised level. This study, therefore, focused on a number of aspects. Firstly, the outcomes of collectively negotiated substantive conditions of employment within the framework of a particular industrial relations system are influenced by many factors. Of these, the financial outcome or result is probably always the most important one to management. Secondly, to determine the cost of agreed-to terms and conditions of employment, those terms and conditions of employment generally found in collective agreements which also have a greater impact on labour cost, need to be identified. Thirdly, with a view to develop a generic computer costing model, information is needed on present computer practices within the context of collective bargaining.en_ZA
