This paper describes the implementation of a dc motor/synchronous motor drive test-bed. The system consists of the 3.3 kV dc motor and the synchronous motor of the motor-alternator set (MA-set) of a class 6E locomotive. The synchronous motor is controlled by a back to back AC-DC-AC hard switched converter with a sustained rating of 50 kVA and a peak rating of 100 kVA. The converter is controlled by an Intel 87KC196 micro controller and hardware implemented current regulators. The system was developed to provide a facility for the testing of motor drives. In the current set-up the system is used to simulate a load of high inertia for the 3.3 kV dc motor drive used by a traction system project.
