dc.description.abstract | ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An historical approach is useful in a study of the role of beginnings in short stories. It shows that there is a big difference between what Edgar Allan Poe, the short story's first critical theorist, called the prose tale, and a postmodernistic example like Harry Kalmer's "Die nag steek op soos 'n seer tand". Through the years diverse aspects regarding the short story have been studied, including those concerning beginning strategies, narrative directions and narrative modes. As the theories were refined, the tendency increased to apply criteria and rules. In contrast to this stringency, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov believed that classification in the short story isn't possible. | en_ZA |
dc.description.abstract | AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In 'n ondersoek na die rol wat beginne in kortverhale speel, is 'n historiese lyn 'n nuttige vertrekpunt. Dit laat blyk dat daar 'n groot verskil is tussen wat Edgar Allan Poe, die kortverhaal se eerste kritiese teoretikus, as die "prose tale" bestempel het, en 'n postmodernistiese voorbeeld soos Harry Kalmer se "Die nag steek op soos 'n seer tand". Daar is deur die jare op verskillende aspekte van die kortverhaal gelet, onder andere diegene rakende beginstrategieë, vertelrigtings en narratiewe modi. Namate teorieë verfyn is, het die neiging toegeneem om maatstawwe en voorskrifte te wil aanwend. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was, in teenstryd met sodanige voorskriftelikheid, van mening dat ordening en die soeke na verbandlegging nie by die kortverhaal moontlik is nie. | af_ZA |
