dc.description.abstractIn order to determine the causal factors in the development of the cardiomyopathy of the Syrian hamster, observations were made of myocardial histology, oxidative phosphorylation, high energy phosphate content, metabolism and mechanical activity of five age groups, ranging from 5 weeks to 10 months. Histological changes as well as biochemical abnormalities were present in the hearts of hamsters 5 weeks of age. With exception of a prolonged t-PH (time to peak height of contraction) period of the myopathic hearts of group I, tension development and contractility were normal up to 3 months of age. However, there was other evidence of disturbed function at 5 weeks of age, as shown by the length-tension curves. The significance and interrelationship of these findings are discussed. © 1970.
