Drawing on an analogy by Kadushin (1992), this paper seeks to examine prevailing issues and challenges in supervision of social workers in South Africa, despite the introduction of a national standardised supervision framework for social workers of the country. Findings of qualitative research into experiences of supervisors and supervisees reveal that supervision policies and frameworks have the potential to advance new public management measures as an operationalisation of neoliberal ideas. Structural issues such as unmanageable workloads and working conditions are highlighted, as well as issues around the competencies and training of supervisors adversely affecting the implementation of the South African supervision framework.en_ZA
