Article
Drawing on careful observations and interviews conducted in two old-age institutions in Stellenbosch, this article critically considers the perception that these institutions fulfil a normal social function. Rather, I show how the very institutions designed to care for the elderly end up producing a discourse that renders old age pathological. The institutions' mediation of the relationship between society and the ageing person is not natural, but instead contributes to an understanding of ageing as social pathology. © South African Sociological Association.
