dc.description.abstractENGLISH ABSTRACT: The personal name stock of a language includes those elements of the language which often are to a great extent subjected to the influence of specific social parameters. As a result, characteristics of the social structure of a society are often reflected in the process of naming, and the personal name is often related to the social attributes of a specific person. Naming in the South African society, and the different ways in which some social parameters are being reflected in South African naming patterns, are investigated in this study. The parameters which are discussed are i) sex (male vs. female), ii) age (old vs. young), iii) family relations, iv) religious relations, v) national relations, vi) racial classification and vii) socioeconomic class. Fieldwork research has been done on the lastnamed parameter. The study showed that personal names in the South African society are not only a linguistic issue, but reveals a special social content too, and forces the investigator to conclude that there is an undoubted relation between the personal name and the abovenamed parameters in the South African society.en_ZA
dc.description.abstractAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die persoonsnaamskat van 'n taal bevat die elemente van die taal wat dikwels in groot mate onderhewig is aan die invloed van bepaalde sosiale parameters. Gevolglik word eienskappe van die sosiale struktuur van 'n samelewing dikwels in die proses van persoonsnaamgewing weerspieël, en hou die persoonsnaam dikwels verband met die sosiale hoedanighede en kenmerke van 'n bepaalde persoon. Persoonsnaamgewing in die Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing, en die verskillende wyses waarop bepaalde sosiale parameters in Suid-Afrikaanse naamgewingspatrone weerspieël word, word in hierdie studie ondersoek. Die parameters wat betrek word, is i) geslag (manlik vs. vroulik), ii) ouderdom (oud vs. jonk), iii) gesinsverband, iv) geloofsverband, v) volksverbondenheid, vi) rasseklassifikasie en vii) sosio-ekonomiese klas. Ten opsigte van laasgenoemde parameter is 'n veldwerkondersoek geloods. Die studie het aan die lig gebring dat persoonsname in die Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing nie slegs 'n taalkundige gegewe is nie, maar dat dit ook oor 'n besondere sosiale inhoud beskik, en bring die ondersoeker by die gevolgtrekking dat daar bepaald 'n verband tussen die persoonsnaamskat en die genoemde parameters in die Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing bestaan.af_ZA
