dc.description.abstractThis study examines Die Stoetmeester by Etienne van Heerden in the context of the tradition of the farm novel in Afrikaans literature in order to determine to what degree the novel follows the tradition and to what degree it deviates from the tradition or adds to it. This is done by firstly examining the early farm novel, a novel type that underwent an upsurge during the Thirties, and then by identifying certain distinctive characteristics that were displayed by the early farm novel. The course of development of the farm novel since the Thirties is subsequently examined to establish to what degree socio-political and literary-technical factors influences this development. Die Stoetmeester, as an example of recent farm novels in Afrikaans, is then examined according to the characteristics of the early farm novel that have been identified. The manner in which the subject is handled in Van Heerden's novel and what similarities with the early farm novels it displays, is then investigated. The differences that can be indicated and the causes for these differences is then examined.en_ZA
dc.description.abstractAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie word Die Stoetmeester van Etienne van Heerden ontleed binne die konteks van die plaasromantradisie in die Afrikaanse letterkunde ten einde vas te stel tot watter mate die roman aansluit by die tradisie en tot watter mate die roman van die tradisie afwyk of dit verruim. Dit word gedoen deur eerstens die vroeë plaasromans, wat as romantipe veral in die dertigerjare in Suid-Afrika 'n oplewing getoon het, te ondersoek en sekere kenmerke van dié romantipe te identifiseer. Die ontwikkelingsgang van die plaasroman in verskeie tydperke sedert die dertigerjarige word dan ondersoek, om onder meer vas te stel in watter mate sosio-politiese en literêr-tegniese faktore die ontwikkeling van die romantipe beïnvloed het. Di Stoetmeester word vervolgens, as een van die mees resente voorbeelde van die plaasroman wat geïdentifiseer is. Daar word dan vasgestel hoe die plaastemiek in Van Heerden se roman hanteer word, watter ooreenkomste dit toon met die vroeë plaasromans, watter verskille aangetoon kan word en aan watter oorsake hierdie verskille toegeskryf kan word.af_ZA
