- ItemHerbert Wiegand with a "metalexicographical panga" in the jungle : an unlocking of Worterbuchforschung(Bureau of the Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal, Stellenbosch University, 2001) Smit, MariaThis article discusses volume 1 of Wiegand's Wörterbuchforschung, which contains asection on the structure of the research field of lexicography, and a section on research on dictionaryuse. Wiegand firstly discusses different aspects of language lexicography and dictionaryresearch to determine whether this type of research constitutes a scientific discipline. He concludesthat it is a scientific research field on its way to become a scientific discipline. In the second section,Wiegand puts forward a theoretical framework for research on dictionary use, based on actiontheory, and a detailed methodology which includes empirical research. Such a theoretical andmethodological foundation, which also takes into account the systematic research on dictionarystructure, can be informative to lexicographers and enable them to plan the microstructures offuture dictionaries in a more systematic way. This might also lead to a more scientific concept ofuser-friendliness in dictionaries.
- ItemThe systematic development of Wiegand's metalexicography as demonstrated in Kleine Schriften(Bureau of the WAT, 2002) Smit, MariaThis review article deals with the contents of the publication Kleine Schriften, a selection of articles written by Herbert Ernst Wiegand and compiled by Matthias Kammerer and Werner Wolski. It purports to illustrate the topics with which Wiegand engaged himself over the years, and his gradual development over a span of thirty years. Wiegand has written on many topics, but in this article mainly two aspects are discussed. Firstly, Wiegand's spelling out of an "actional-semantic approach" to lexicography is explained. He investigates the works of many authors, sometimes drawing on them, and sometimes refuting their arguments. Secondly, Wiegand's construction of a detailed text theory for lexicographical texts is discussed. Wiegand is one of the most important theoretical lexicographers of our time, and his suggestions towards metalexicographical terminology and distinctions form an essential part of present-day lexicographical practices and planning across the world.
- ItemUlrike Rothe. Das einsprachige Worterbuch in seinem soziokulturellen Kon-text : Gesellschaftliche und sprachwissenschaftliche Aspekte in der Lexikogra-phie des Englischen und des Franzosischen(Bureau of the WAT, 2003) Smit, MariaThe main title of this work might be a bit misleading, because it creates the impression that a very wide and general topic will be discussed. The subtitle, however, is much more to the point, since the author specifically investigates English and French monolingual dictionaries in view of certain aspects. The author makes it clear (2001: 210) that she does not want to describe general "influences" of a socio-cultural nature on the contents of dictionaries, but rather how socio-cultural trends and traditions had an impact on the methodological aspects of lexicography in Britain and France. This means that generalisation for other languages will only be possible after further in-depth studies.
