ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Poetry is in essence an interplay of signs. The mature poet fully exploits the possibilities of the sign system. Insights of various semioticians will serve to underpin my thesis that Elisabeth Eybers, particularly in Respyt (1993) and Nuweling (1994), encodes her experience of old age in a highly personal and innovative way. The poetic discourse in fact becomes a mode of perception and a means of interpretation.
