- ItemMusiek vir koperblaasensembles deur Suid-Afrikaanse komponiste(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1996) Loeb van Zuilenburg, Paul; Temmingh, R. W.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Music.Music for diverse brass ensembles have been written by South African composers since 1943. Contrary to general expectation a large number of such works, written between the years 1943-1988, could be traced. The main sources were private collections, university and military libraries. Many of these works are compositions by well known composers written for special occasions and merit closer investigation. The object of this study was to locate as much relevant material as possible. Those that fall within the category of fanfare or brass quintet were analysed as well as considered for practical use by either amateur or professional ensembles. A list of for larger ensembles as well as works using brass with other diverse instrumentation is also included. The conclusion of this study is that there is still a lack of suitable music written by local composers for brass ensemble performers. This is mainly due to a lack of understanding by many South African composers of the possibilities of brass instruments or otherwise the disinterest of these composers to write for this medium. There are notable exceptions to this statement and these composers are applauded for their efforts.
