Abstract
Reconciliation rituals: typologies and processes. Insights from a descriptive exploration of the ritual market. In this article a descriptive exploration of reconciliation rituals is undertaken. Reconciliation rituals are firstly described under ten headings based on the subjects involved in the reconciliation process. Thereafter six typologies are derived from the description and compared to the grieving process as well as Victor Turner’s notion of the Social Drama. From a comparison between these distinct phenomena, it is concluded that typologies of reconciliation rituals have a dual significance concerning the reconciliation process. On the one hand they give insight into where within the process of reconciliation an individual or community finds itself and on the other hand it is helpful in ascertaining which type of reconciliation rituals fit where in the process. These insights can be inculturated into the liturgy in order to help the church in being an agent of reconciliation.
