In the wake of the momentous events of 1989 and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union, the free-market system and a capitalist economy seemed to be ‘the only game in town’. But less than two decades later, with the onset of the sub-prime mortgage delinquencies and the subsequent financial crisis of 2008-2009, the free-market system has come in for criticism. And as fears about the effects of the crisis on the stability of democracy began to mount, so the values underlying capitalism were placed under the spotlight. At the same time the question of how to deal with crises of this nature and with the conflicts they produce has come to the fore.
