| dc.description.abstract | ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The research profiles household poverty in the Gauteng City Region using the asset/wealth index. The main aim is to determine how household poverty varies among female- and male-headed households, and determine the factors associated with poverty among female- and male-headed households. The study adopted a multidimensional approach and used the principal component analysis to create the asset index using the 2016 Community Survey data. The asset index was found to be robust and consistent. The findings show that 38 per cent of the households in the GCR were asset poor in 2016, and that male-headed households in GCR were more likely to be poor than female-headed ones. The index corroborates some other poverty studies that were done in South Africa indicating that black Africans and coloured households are more likely than Asian/Indian and white households to be asset poor. Differentials of poverty by headship and age groups showed that the male-headed households were more asset poor at younger ages, whilst asset poverty for female-headed households was more prevalent among older age groups. Altogether, poor male-headed households tend to be more represented in households that are smaller in size, compared to poor femaleheaded households that are generally larger in size. Single-person households were more prevalent among male-headed households in the GCR and had the highest asset poverty level when considering the household composition as well as intergeneration households. The analysis of asset poverty by housing characteristics revealed that asset poverty was highest among households that resided in informal and traditional dwellings as compared to those that lived in formal dwellings. The spatial pattern of poverty shows that asset poverty is unevenly distributed in the GCR with municipalities in the periphery poorer whilst some moderate levels of asset poverty exist in the metropolitan areas of the GCR. The determinants of poverty in the GCR are population group, age group and the level of education of the household head, the household size, intergeneration and geography type. | en_ZA |
| dc.description.abstract | AFRIKAANS OPSOMMING: Die navorsing is ‘n uiteensetting van huishoudelike armoede in die Gautengstadstreek deur gebruik te maak van die bate-/welvaartindeks. Die hoofdoel is om te bepaal hoe armoede verskil tussen huishoudings waarvan vroue aan die hoof staan en dié waarvan mans aan die hoof staan, en om die faktore wat met armoede verband hou van hierdie onderskeie huishoudings te bepaal. Die studie het ‘n multidimensionele benadering aangeneem en hoofkomponentanalise gebruik om die bate-indeks te skep deur data van die 2016 Gemeenskapsopname te gebruik. Daar is gevind dat die bate-indeks kragtig en konsekwent is. Die bevindinge toon dat 38 persent van die huishoudings in die Gauteng-stadstreek in 2016 bate-arm was, en dat huishoudings in die Gauteng-stadstreek waarvan mans aan die hoof staan, meer geneig was om arm te wees as huishoudings waarvan vroue aan die hoof staan. Die indeks staaf sommige ander armoedestudies wat in Suid-Afrika onderneem is, en wat daarop dui dat swart en bruin huishoudings meer waarskynlik bate-arm sal wees in vergelyking met Indiër- en wit huishoudings. Verskille in armoede op die basis van hoofskap en ouderdomsgroep het getoon dat huishoudings waarvan mans aan die hoof staan armer was op vroeëre ouderdomme, terwyl bate-armoede ten opsigte van huishoudings waarvan vroue aan die hoof staan meer algemeen onder ouer ouderdomsgroepe voorgekom het. Alles in ag genome is bate-arm huishoudings waarvan mans aan die hoof staan meer algemeen onder kleiner huishoudings, in vergelyking met huishoudings waarvan vroue aan die hoof staan, wat geneig is om groter te wees. Eenpersoonshuishoudings in die Gauteng-stadstreek het meer algemeen voorgekom onder huishoudings waarvan mans aan die hoof staan, en het die grootste mate van bate-armoede getoon indien die huishouding se samestelling en intergenerasie-huishoudings in ag geneem word. Die analise van bate-armoede op grond van behuisingseienskappe het getoon dat bate-armoede die meeste voorgekom het in huishoudings wat in informele of tradisionele wonings gebly het, in vergelyking met huishoudings wat in formele wonings gebly het. Die ruimtelike patroon van armoede toon dat armoede oneweredig in die Gauteng-stadstreek versprei is, waar munisipaliteite in die buitewyke van die streek armer is en matige vlakke van armoede in die metropolitaanse gebiede van die Gauteng-stadstreek ervaar word. Die bepalende faktore van armoede in die Gauteng stadstreek is bevolkingsgroep, ouderdomsgroep, onderwysvlak van die huishoudingshoof, grootte van die huishouding, intergenerasie en geografiese tipe. | af_ZA |
