Efficacy of fibrin sealant in prevention of adhesion formation on ovarian surgical wounds in a rabbit model

dc.description.abstract | The aim of the study was to determine whether the use of fibrin sealant decreases adhesion formation in ovarian surgical wounds in a rabbit model. A total of 20 female rabbits underwent a midline laparotomy. Microsurgical techniques were used to bivalve each ovary. After randomization one ovary was treated with fibrin sealant, while the other ovary served as a control. Prior to the study project a control group of 15 rabbits was included to study the effect of the laparotomy on the adhesion score of non-bivalved ovaries. At 3 weeks after surgery the adhesion scores were compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. The mean adhesion score of the fibrin sealant-treated ovaries (5.20 ± 1.24) was significantly different from the control ovaries (7.35 ± 2.32) (P = 0.0009; confidence intervals 95%). In our study we were able to demonstrate a benefit from using fibrin sealant to decrease postoperative adhesion formation of ovarian surgical wounds in a rabbit model. No influence of the laparotomy on the ovaries was shown. These findings can have applications in endoscopic surgery when procedures are performed on ovaries of human subjects. | |
