| dc.description.abstract | Die artikel vorm deel van ’n groter projek om die eienskappe van aansporende tekste te bestudeer en spesifiek ook om die aansporende eienskappe van Augustinus se Confessiones op ’n meer genuanseerde wyse te beskryf. Die teoretiese raamwerk waarbinne die argumente gesitueer is, is dié van die poststrukturalistiese vertelkunde en genrestudies. Die openingsparagrawe van boek 10 van die Confessiones word ontleed om aan te toon hoe dit ’n kontras vorm met die voorafgaande nege boeke, waar protreptiese kommunikatiewe doelstellings sterk op die voorgrond is. Die geselekteerde gedeeltes word ontleed aan die hand van die gesaghebbende Lund- en Oslo-definisies van paranese. Daar word aangetoon hoe die kommunikatiewe doelstellings, die verhouding tussen die spreker en sy gehoor en aanduidings van wie die bedoelde gehoor is, ’n wending daarstel van ’n oorwegend protreptiese na ’n oorwegend paranetiese skryfwyse. | en_ZA |
| dc.description.abstract | The article forms part of a bigger project on the nature of exhortative texts as well as an endeavour to arrive at a nuanced description of the exhortative characteristics of Augustine’s Confessions. Here the focus is on the paraenetic characteristics discernible at the opening of book 10 of this work (10.1.1 to 10.4.6) and the contrast this represents with the preceding books of the Confessions, which may be regarded as primarily protreptic in character. The approach followed is situated within the theoretical framework of post-structural narratology and genre studies and highlights primarily the communicative purpose(s) and the intended audience(s) of the passages under consideration. | |
