dc.description.abstractENGLISH ABSTRACT: Unequal-legged angles are used most commonly as truss elements or as lateral bracing for elements of steel structures. In most of these applications, the angles are connected to gusset plates through two or more bolts, or the equivalent in welding. These angles are loaded eccentrically with respect to their cross-sectional centroid. Although angle struts are loaded eccentrically in most application, no specific design method exists for the design of eccentrically loaded angle struts. The design curves provided in SABS 0162-1:1993 are only valid for concentrically loaded sections with a symmetrical cross-section. The user is warned only against the effect of flexuraltorsional buckling on the ultimate capacity. The beam-column theory can be used for the design of eccentrically loaded, unequal-legged angle struts. However, the formulas available to determine the ultimate flexural capacity of unequal-legged angle struts are complex and not easily accessible. It was decided therefore to develop a design method, based on the method in SABS 0162-1:1993, which could be used specificially for the design of eccentrically loaded truss compression members.en_ZA
dc.description.abstractAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Ongelykbenige hoekysers word hoofsaaklik gebruik as vakwerk-elemente of as laterale ondersteuning vir die verskillende elemente van staalstrukture. In die meeste van hierdie toepassings word die hoekyster deur die een been verbind aan 'n laspaat deur middel van twee of meer boute of deur middel van sweisnate. Die hoekyster word dus eksentries belas ten opsigte van sy sentroïede. Alhoewel hoekyster-drukstange hoofsaaklik eksentries belas word, bestaan daar nie 'n spesifieke ontwerpmetode vir hierdie tipe elemente nie. Die ontwerpkurwes, soos voorsien deur SABS 0162-1:1993, maak slegs voorsiening vir konsentries belaste kolomme, met twee asse van simmetrie. Die gebruiker word slegs gewaarsku teen die effek van buig-torsieknik op die kapasiteit van nie-simmetriese snitte. Die balk-kolom teorie is geskik om die kapasiteit van eksentries belaste drukstange te bepaal. Die vergelykings benodig om die buigkapasiteit van ongelykbenige hoekysters te bepaal is egter kompleks en nie geredelik beskikbaar nie. Daar is, na aanleiding van bostaande, besluit om 'n nuwe ontwerpmetode vir hierdie tipe stange te ontwikkel en om hierdie metode te baseer op die vergelykings soos gegee in SABS 0162-1:1993. Hierdie nuwe metode kan gebruik word vir ontwerp van ongelykbenige hoekysters wat gerbuik word as drukstange in vakwerke.af_ZA
