dc.description.abstractAsthma is one of the most chronic illnesses found in children. Recent population studies of children with asthma yield prevalence estimates from 10% to 15% among primary school children. The life-world of the child consists of different relationships: his parents, friends, teachers, himself, objects and ideas and with God. Disturbed relationships lead to a disturbed life-world. Psychological risk factors associated with asthma have been identified, including (a) depressive symptoms, (b) disregard or denial of asthmatic symptoms, (c) an unsupportive school environment, (d) conflict between the parents, (e) a low self-esteem, ( f) a stigmatizing attitude amongst teachers and members of the community, (g) impaired identification and (h) impaired social relationships. Like children with other chronic illnesses, children with asthma are at risk for psychosocial difficulties. Decreased psychosocial functioning may be manifested in behavioural problems, poor peer relationships and/or diminished academic performance. Children with asthma may suffer from a variety of functional impairments, depending on the severity and nature of their illness. Acute exacerbations of symptoms (e.g. wheezing and coughing) may lead to bed rest, restricted physical activity, and/or school absence. Chronic manifestations of the illness (e.g. shortness of breath and airway hyperreactivity) may result in impaired physical conditioning and avoidance of certain foods or social activities.en_ZA
dc.description.abstractAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Asma is een van die mees algemene kroniese siektes by kinders. Onlangse navorsing onder kinders met asma toon 'n geraamde voorkoms van 10% tot 15% onder primêre skool leerlinge. Die kind se leefwêreld bestaan uit verskillende verhoudings wat hy stig met onder andere ouers, maats, onderwysers, homself, objekte en idees en met God. Versteurde verhoudings lei tot 'n versteurde leefwêreld. Sielkundige risikofaktore wat geassosieer word met asma is geidentifiseer, naamlik (a) simptome van depressie, (b) geringskatting of ontkenning van simptome van asma, (c) min ondersteuning deur die skoolgemeenskap, (d) konflik tussen die ouers, (e) 'n lae selfbeeld, (f) 'n stigmatiserende houding deur die onderwysers en die gemeenskap, (g) probleme ten opsigte van identifikasie en (h) versteurde verhoudingstigting. Net soos ander kinders met kroniese siektes, loop kinders met asma gevaar om psigososiale probleme te ondervind. Inkorting van psigososiale funksionering kan manifesteer in gedragsprobleme, swak portuurgroepverhoudinge en/of skolastiese onderprestasie. Kinders met asma se daaglikse funksionering kan ingekort word, afhangende van die erns en aard van hulle siekte. Akute simptome (bv. 'n gehyg na asem en hoesbuie) kan aanleiding gee tot bedrus, inkorting van fisieke aktiwiteite, en/of skoolafwesigheid. Die kroniese manifestasie van die siekte (bv. kortasemigheid en 'n oorreaksie van die lugweë op allergene) kan swak fisieke gesondheid en vermyding van sekere voedselsoorte en vermyding van sosiale aktiwiteite tot gevolg hê.af_ZA
