Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main objective of this investigation is to establish evidence for the cause of the post-Cape deformation along 22½°E by assessment of style and intensity of structures. Mega-folds in the Cape and Karoo rocks along this profile are of variable style, but have initially all formed by a flexural-slip mechanism. This was probably aided locally by gravity forces. Asymmetrical limb attenuations of second order flattened flexural-slip folds in the Table Mountain Group in Merings Poort, and a homogeneous structural trend in the cover rocks, however, do not fit a gravity-gliding model for the Cape Fold Belt.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die analise van styl en intensiteit van sekonêre strukture langs 22½° oosterlente word hier gebruik om die oorsaak van vervorming in die Kaapse Plooigordel af te lei. Megaplooie in die Kaap- en Karoo-gesteentes langs hierdie profiel is van verskillende styl, maar het aanvanklik almal deur 'n buigglymeganisme gevorm wat moontlik lokaal deur gravitasie-effekte ondersteun was. Verplatte buigglyplooie en asimmetriese flankverdunnings van tweede-orde plooie in die Tafelberggroep tesame met 'n homogene strukturele neiging in die dekgesteentes langs hierdie profiel is strydig met 'n oorsprong van die strukture wat uitsluitlik aan gravitasiegly gekoppel word.
