H SUMMARY: Twenty years ago, the Department of Basic Education in South Africa introduced the Education White Paper 6: Building an inclusive education and training system, to ensure that all children between seven and 15 could access quality basic education. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory study in the Johannesburg East District of Gauteng was to establish the barriers that ordinary primary schools experience to accommodate children with mobility impairments, and what structures and procedures they put in place to bridge those barriers. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with eight principals and a thematic analysis revealed that barriers included structural challenges like stairs and uneven school grounds, insufficient support from the District, and attitudinal barriers. Some schools devised cost-effective ways to overcome these barriers through collaboration with the community, educators, parents and children, but others were still waiting for external guidance and assistance. To ensure that all children with mobility impairments are reasonably accommodated, schools will need further assistance from the Gauteng Department of Education.en_ZA
