H ABSTRACT: A study was conducted to investigate and to compare the mechanical pulp properties of South African grown pine species. The species were evaluated with regards. to their respective· Thermomechanical pulping (TMP) and Chemithermomechanical pulping (CTMP) properties. The following ten species, all 16 years old, were comparatively evaluated: Pinus ayacahuite, Pinus elliottii, , Pinus greggii, Pinus kesiya, Pinus leiophylla, Pinus patula, Pinus pseudostrobus, Pinus radiata, Pinus taeda and Pinus tecunumani Pinus piltula was used as reference throughout the study. The influence of wood anatomical properties and fibre morphology on the pulping characteristics played a key role in this study. For each species the wood anatomical properties including fibre dimensions were measured. Lignin and extractives content were also determined. Refming energy requirements, pulp yield, shives content and fibre size distributionweie recorded. Strength and optical. properties of paper were obtained fromhandsheets. From these results obtained, it was concluded that Pinus radiata was the most promising species with regards to strength properties. Pinus patuia, Pinus greggii and Pinus kesiya also had good mechanical pulping characteristics. Pinus ayacahuite had the lowest strength properties but the best optical, properties along with Pinus leiophylla.
