There is a growing need for information on the multicultural educational situation. This has made measurement instruments which can be applied across language and cultural barriers essential. For this reason a comprehensive research project has been launched by the Department of Educational Psychology and Specialised Education at the University of Stellenbosch. Using an appropriate personality questionnaire, the project aims to determine trends in regard to the personality types of Xhosa, Afrikaans and English speaking secondary school pupils from these various communities. An important component of this project was to compare the Murphy-Meisgeier Vraelys vir Kinders (MMvK) - a new instrument in South Africa - to the Jung-Persoonlikheidsvraelys (JPV), which has been in use in South Africa since 1983 in a career counselling context. Both questionnaires are based on the typology of C.G. Jung. The aim was to determine whether the two questionnaires would yield similar results. If so, the arsenal of personality questionnaires - especially those that indicate personality type - that could be used with so-called coloured learners, would be extended. In addition, it was deemed important to collect as much information as possible about the MMvK, so that this questionnaire could be used with confidence in South Africa in the future. Furthermore, as the concept of personality type holds so many implications for education, all information regarding personality type of South African learners is regarded as important.en_ZA
