dc.description.abstractENGLISH ABSTRACT: Soil is a service providing asset under growing pressure but it is also home to an array of soil-dwelling species encompassing virtually all terrestrial invertebrate phyla. The impact humaninduced change is having on the rich endemic soil biodiversity in many parts of the world is hardly known in spite of the fact that they play an important role in soils where they can influence chemical, physical and biological processes. Our literature search showed that although much has been written on the influence of global environmental changes on natural and managed terrestrial ecosystems, less than 3% of articles published in ecological journals dealt with belowground organisms or processes. Very few of these address the drivers of transformation such as rising CO2 levels, warming, land use, pollution and changing precipitation in relation to the very soil food webs underpinning human food production. In this review we highlight some of the main drivers of environmental change that are evidently impacting on soil ecosystems and posing a threat to soil biodiversity and processes. We examined the available evidence of such changes, their causes and possible impacts. We conclude that the evidence is mounting that growth of land use, increase in build-up areas, physical and chemical impact of mining and other industrial activities. Landfarming of toxic wastes, invasion of exotic species and shrub encroachment are also transforming the soil environment with consequences for soil biodiversity. The extent severity of this impact and its long term implications are not always very clear because much of the evidence is based on association rather than causation. A better understanding of the diversity and its role is needed before the environmental risks can be assessed reliably and goals of sustainability and conservation of soil biodiversity can be realised.en_ZA
dc.description.abstractAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Grond is ’n diensverskaffende bate wat onder toenemende druk verkeer maar is ook die tuiste van ‘n menigte grondlewende spesies wat bykans alle terrestriële dierfilums insluit. Die uitwerking van verandering as gevolg van menslike aktiwiteite op die groot inheemse biodiversiteit in die grond is grootliks onbekend in die meeste dele van die wêreld ten spyte van die feit dat grondorganismes ’n belangrike rol speel in fisiese, chemiese en biologiese prosesse. ’n Literatuursoektog is onderneem wat toon dat baie reeds geskryf is oor die uitwerking van globale omgewingsveranderinge op natuurlike en bestuurde terrestriële ekostelsels, maar minder as 3% van die gepubliseerde vakliteratuur in ekologiese joernale handel oor grondlewende organismes en prosesse. Min hiervan fokus op die drywers van transformasie soos die stygende CO2 vlakke, verwarming, besoedeling, grondgebruike en veranderde reënvalpatrone met betrekking tot die grond se voedingswebbe wat die basis vorm van die mens se voedselproduksie. In hierdie oorsig lig ons uit en ondersoek die belangrikste drywers van omgewingsverandering wat ‘n invloed uitoefen op grondekostelsels en ’n bedreiging mag inhou vir grondbiodiversiteit en prosesse Die beskikbare getuienis van veranderinge, hulle oorsake en moontlike implikasies word nagegaan in ’n poging om leemtes en navorsingsbehoeftes te identifiseer. Getuienis word meer dat die toename in onder andere grondgebruik, verstedeliking, die fisiese en chemiese impak van mynbou en ander industriële aktiwiteite, die grondbewerking van giftige afval en indringing van uitheemse spesies ook die grondomgewing en sy bewoners nadelig raak. Daar is egter baie ruimte vir navorsing omdat kennis van die omvang en aard sowel as die langtermyn gevolge nog nodig is. Baie getuienis is gebaseer op assosiasie eerder as om oorsaaklikheid tussen die veranderinge en die gevolge te bevestig. ’n Beter begrip van die grondbiodiversiteit se rol is nodig om die omgewingsrisikos wat die veranderinge inhou betroubaar te kan beoordeel sodat doelwitte van volhoubaarheid en bewaring van biodiversiteit kan realiseer.af_ZA
