H ABSTRACT: As the AIDS epidemic has continued to spread among the world population it has had a double effect on children through infection and/or being rendered orphans through the death of their parents. With the growing developments in the area of pediatric HIV that have led to establishment of standards in the care of HIV positive children, the study sought to determine the standard of care, treatment and support that residential institutions provide to HIV positive children under their care and how they meet the requirements needed in caring for them. This study used an exploratory design to gain insight on the subject area. A qualitative method with semi-structured interview guide was used targeting the administrators in two residential institutions that care for HIV positive children. The study established that high standards are applied in the care of HIV positive children in the two residential institutions in line with recommended standards. Unfortunately even with the advent of pediatric antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment and Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) programmes there has not been a significant decline in the intake and referral of HIV positive children into the residential homes. The HIV positive children are not exempt from stigma and discrimination and need a great deal of support to cope with this and other psychosocial issues in all areas of their lives. Recommendations are proposed for policy makers, Government, children's department and donors to improve in the holistic care of HIV positive children.en_ZA
