H ABSTRACT: The black worker renders his most important contribution to the development of the South African economy through his labour. Currently there is considerable interest in research concerning the role of the worker in the organisation, particularly in the areas of remuneration and labour relations. Since there is still largely a lack of knowledge about the perceptions of black workers of fringe benefits in relation to job satisfaction, the need exists for further research in this regard. This study deals with the influence of the attitude of black workers towards fringe benefits on job satisfaction. In addition to this, the perception of white workers towards the fringe benefits of black workers was researched. Possible differences that could exist between various ages, terms of service and salary groups regarding attitude towards fringe benefits also received attention. The instrument used to measure job satisfaction, is the "general job satisfaction" component of the JDS (“Job Diagnostic Survey") (Hackman and Oldham, 1974). A questionnaire was developed to determine attitudes towards fringe benefits. The questionnaires were completed by means of interviewing each of 214 workers in a manufacturing company and 230 workers in a municipality.en_ZA
