H ABSTRACT: The Southern African Church and Concert Organists Association (SAKOV) celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2020. Over the past four decades, SAKOV has taken a unique place in Southern Africa to promote the priorities of the church and concert organist and also offers various opportunities for music leaders, church councils, ministers, composers and organ builders. The association was initially founded to support the organists of the three Afrikaans sister churches, namely the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk and the Gereformeerde Kerk. Since its foundation, the inclusiveness of this association has changed substantially in the context of the Reformed Chuch tradition and post-apartheid in South Africa. With these continuous changes in the church, especially in the worship service, SAKOV is notable for following this from the outset in a multicultural context. At the founding meeting of SAKOV in 1980, Albert Troskie mentioned that the publication of a journal, namely Vir die Musiekleier, would be an important aspect of the association. The goal of this journal is to provide information to organists and those interested in the field of church music, organ music and liturgy. Vir die Musiekleier serves, among other things, as a comprehensive collection of articles and relevant research that addresses these various aspects of organ and church music. In 2011 Vir die Musiekleier obtained accreditation and in 2013 the first article was published in English. In 2015 the name changed to Vir die Musiekleier / To the Director of Music and since then the journal is published in bilingual format. This study provides an overview of the research that has been done, in terms of published articles in Vir die Musiekleier / To the Director of Music, from 1980-2020. Articles have been categorised and classified according to specific rubric divisions, and each research article’s content has been briefly summarised. It can thus serve as a catalogue for future researchers in the field of church music, organ music and liturgy.en_ZA
