T: The South African woman, due to the winds of political-social change, has a totally new role to play in the workplace. However, reality shows numerous hurdles, which she will have to overcome in order to reach the level of acceptable conditions in the work place. Although motivation in a working place is a global issue, the South African woman of the present has to face quite acute problems that seem to be inherent to this country. In aggravation of the situation, companies in South Africa mostly follow the patriarchal system in which top management comprises of males and the male way of doing things. The great disparities in favour of men in senior positions are further proof of the unacceptable situation in our country. It is a fact that women do not move up the ladder as fast as men. Bias against women is a great barrier that needs to be broken in South Africa. Unconscious discrimination based on perceptions such, as that woman are the weaker sex, and are over-emotional, short-term employees, etc. are still in place.
