dc.description.abstract | ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study concerns the modification of polyvinyl alcohol (PVAL) by raction with potassium persulphate (K2S2O8) to form tolerant insolubale nanofiltration membranes on tubular polyther sulphone (PES) ultrafiltration substrates. These membranes gave 50 5 retention and 40 lmh flux for a 2000ppm NaCI feed, and 75% retention and 40 lmh flux for feed containing 1000 ppm MgSO4 (2 MPa, 20 degrees Celcius, 1,3 m/s). The effect of the production variables on membrane performance is discussed. The reaction of PVAL with K2S2O8 was characterized by various spectroscopic and other techniques. | en_ZA |
