H SUMMARY: There is strong evidence that health outcomes are improved by effective doctor-patient communication. Additionally, poor communication between healthcare colleagues is associated with medical error. Despite this evidence, there is a lack of training and assessment of communication skills at postgraduate level in South Africa. The views and needs of registrars should be considered when designing a postgraduate communication skills curriculum as it may impact its appropriateness and effectiveness. The aim of this study was to explore registrars’ perceptions of communication skills and the training thereof. This was an exploratory qualitative study that included one-to-one interviews with ten obstetrics and gynaecology registrars at Stellenbosch University. Four strong themes emerged namely registrars’ views on communication skills in general, communicating with colleagues, postgraduate communication skills training practices, and recommendations for communication skills training. The key findings of this study reveal that registrars value communication skills and believe it could be improved with training. They emphasised communication challenges with colleagues, especially consultants. The registrars experience the communication skills training in the department as mostly informal and of variable quality. They recommended that communication skills should be formally taught and assessed. Additionally, they suggested that communication training includes ways to overcome registrar communication challenges with consultants as these likely has a negative impact on both patient care and the learning environment. This study’s results demonstrate the value of a needs assessment as part of a curriculum development initiative.en_ZA
