This study investigates ancient Israel's view of suffering as social reality, against Western, linear-logical and mostly idealistic explanations for suffering. The focus is on how suffering as social reality is represented in Israel's literature. Psalm 22 is studies as ancient Hebrew, and therefore ancient Eastern, literature, and serves as a window on ancient Israel's mental world. The abrupt transition in Psalm 22 from a lament to doxology is of central importance. The change of mood is investigated by looking at the Psalm's structure and by comparing it to other ancient Eastern texts. Different explanations given for the radical change or transition is examined and the question whether a new perspective on the problem is possible.en_ZA
