dc.description.abstractDe Gereformeerde Kerkbode was established in 1849 (which means that the one hundred and fiftieth year of its existence will be commemorated at the turn of the century); it was also the official weekly journal of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk of South Africa from 1884. Since De Kerkbode was associated with the members of the abovementioned creed and other inhabitants of our country for about a century and a half, the journal and its contents deserve the attention of researchers in cultural, ecclesiastical, language and social history. Because of the exceptionally long history of De Kerkbode this study concentrates only on the first 75 years (1849-1923) of its existence. The investigation required that all issues of the journal over this perdiod be consulted in detail.en_ZA
dc.description.abstractAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: De Gereformeerde Kerkbode wat in die jaar 1849 tot stand gekom het en dus die eersvolgende eeuwending sy honderd-en-vyftugste bestaan sal gedenk, is sedert 1884 ook die amptelike weekblad van die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk van Suid-Afrika. Aangesien De Kerkbode die pad bykans anderhalfeeu saam met kerklidmate van genoemde kerk en ander inwoners van ons land geloop het, verdien die blad en sy inhoud die aandag van navorsers oor die kultuur-, kerk-,taal- en sosiale geskiedenis. Ten aansien van die buitengewoon lang bestaansgeskiedenis van De Kerkbode strek die studie slegs oor die eerste 75 jaar (1849-1923) van hierdie periode. Die ondersoek het dit vereis dat alle uitgawes van die blad oor hierdie tydperk noukeurig ontgin moes word.af_ZA
