E OPSOMMING: “Ethical conduct is about doing the right things the right way; not that the ends justify the means, but also simply doing the right thing, it did not matter what the outcomes were.”
H ABSTRACT: “Ethical conduct is about doing the right things the right way; not that the ends justify the means, but also simply doing the right thing, it did not matter what the outcomes were.” (Khoza, 2016) Ethics and ethical behaviour raise different questions within the society of South‐Africa. In 2016 questions were raised among students in South‐Africa about the increase of student fees and limiting the opportunity for higher education. The context of South‐Africans speaks of poverty and the issue of poverty can no longer only be answered by referring to the constitution of South‐Africa, but needs an ethical answer. This study wants to address these ethical questions by using the Bible as a guide for ethical virtues. However, the history of South‐Africa has shown that ethical behaviour reflected within the Bible can be used irresponsibly. This study uses an analogical perspective to state that by defining the world of the text and contemporary context as clearly as possible, a responsible hermeneutic can be developed to engage the text and contemporary context of South‐Africa. A hermeneutic that uses both the literary and historical dimensions of the Old Testament can potentially ensure a more responsible ethics. Against this background, the present study will develop the ethical virtues, reconciliation and provision, with reference to poverty and affluence from the Joseph narrative in Genesis 37-50.en_ZA
