H ABSTRACT: South Africa has been undergoing a process of rapid urbanisation for some time. The consequence of this urbanisation process, like uncontrolled squatting, is evident in the metropoles, cities and larger towns. Not withstanding, conditions in most rural areas are even worse. Continued research is therefore necessary for the development of strategies that will specifically address the problems and needs of rural areas and communities. Against this background farm worker communities have been identified as an important component of the rural population in need of better living conditions. As a solution the central farm village is proposed as a possible socio-economic development strategy for farm workers. The theoretical and case studies that were undertaken indicate that the concept of a central farm village is a viable strategy not only for the socio-economic upliftment of farm workers, but also as a means of controlled urbanisation. However, central farm villages cannot merely be developed in every region in South Africa. In this regard possible constraints were identified and a number of proposals were made for implementation of the strategy.
