ENGLISH SUMMARY: This research sought to extend the existing scientific literature regarding the psychological effect of injuries. According to the related literature sportspersons react differently to injuries. A number of models are used in the description of the reaction to injuries of which Kubler-Ross's model (1969) is most cited. Interviews were conducted with 21 sportspersons who competed on at least provincial level. They represented different age groups, sport types, genders and cultural groups. All the sportspersons were unable to compete in competitive sport due to injury for at least two months. A semi-structured interview guide was used during the interviews. Psychology-based literature as it pertained to the experience of loss and models of injury response, as well as existing qualitative methodological sources, and the researcher's own experience of working with people who suffered losses, were used in the composition of the interview guide. The injury process was divided into different phases, namely: • Pre-injury phase • Injury phase • Treatment decisions and planning phase • Early rehabilitation phase • Late rehabilitation phase • Return to competition A pilot study was conducted with two injured sportsmen. The purpose of the pilot interview was to ensure that the interview questions were tapping into the appropriate information and that the questions were clear. Changes were made and the interview guide was presented to psychologists in order to verify the contents. All the interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The QSR NUD*IST computer programme, specifically designed to manage qualitative data, was used in the coding and analysis of the data. Triangulation was used to ensure the validity of the coded data and analyzed data. A fellow psychologist with an interest in sport was used in the process of triangulation for the coding of the data and data analysis. The sportspersons reacted differently to injuries. These differences were also evident within the different phases of the injury management process. The injured sportspersons identified different types of losses experienced during the different phases. A number of factors affecting their cognitions and emotions during the different phases of the injury management process were identified. Their perception and the degree of the experienced loss, as well as the cognitive and emotional reactions were largely influenced by the meaning that sport participation has for them. A number of advantages related to being injured were also identified. The purpose of the research was reached through the identification of the different cognitive and emotional reactions to injuries within the different phases of the injury management process.
