Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Wind directions influence the wave climate, causing different water levels and higher or lower waves. Cape Town beaches and especially southern peninsula beaches have two main sea- sons of sediment transport due to their location. This is the influence of south-easterly winds and associated waves in summer and north-westerly winds and associated swell in winter. During these seasons, erosion events often happen, causing damage to the coastline and sometimes further landward. Limited research has so far been done on the sediment transport and beach dynamics of the western False Bay coastline (Cape Town’s southern peninsula beaches). This thesis entailed the collection of field data and subsequent analyses of beach profile changes to determine the combined effects of winds, waves and tides on the coastal zone at Glencairn beach, Cape Town, South Africa. In addition, the SBEACH numerical model was employed to study the cross-shore sediment transport and morphology. For a deeper investigation of erosion behaviour along the western False Bay beaches, fifteen data sets were collected at various times between 01/2020 and 02/2021 and used as input data for SBEACH. The model outputs were analysed in the various storm and swell wave events to determine the wave and wind impact in different weather conditions. This was ac- companied by sensitivity analyses and simulations of different storm behaviour and beach re- sponse to identify potential solutions against beach erosion and coastal flooding. It was found that the impact of storms was predicted partly correct by SBEACH. However, the model does not account for windblown sand, accretion, and longshore transport, which may contribute significantly to the beach dynamics. The results of the field work and the numerical modelling were compared and analysed to present different hard and soft structure solutions regarding the mitigation of large erosion events and wind-blown sand. Based on this, a recommendation for action is made followed by the need for future research studies, which are necessary to further evaluate the findings of this thesis.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Windrigtings beïnvloed die golfklimaat, wat verskillende watervlakke en hoër of laer golwe veroorsaak. Kaapstadse strande en veral strande in die suidelike skiereiland het twee hoof seisoene van sediment vervoer as gevolg van hul ligging. Dit is die invloed van suidoostewinde en gepaardgaande golwe in die somer en noordwestelike winde en gepaardgaande deining in die winter. Gedurende hierdie seisoene vind erosie gebeure dikwels plaas, wat skade aan die kuslyn en soms verder landwaards veroorsaak. Beperkte navorsing is tot dusver gedoen oor die sediment vervoer en strand-dinamika van die westelike Valsbaai-kuslyn (Kaapstad se suidelike skiereiland strande). Hierdie tesis het die insameling van velddata en daaropvolgende ontledings van strand profiel veranderinge behels om die gekombineerde uitwerking van winde, golwe en getye op die kussone by Glencairn strand, Kaapstad, Suid-Afrika te bepaal. Daarbenewens is die SBEACH numeriese model aangewend om die dwars-sedimentvervoer en morfologie te bestudeer. Vir 'n dieper ondersoek van erosie-gedrag langs die westelike Valsbaai-strande, is vyftien datastelle op verskillende tye tussen 01/2020 en 02/2021 ingesamel en as insetdata vir SBEACH gebruik. Die modeluitsette is in die verskillende storm- en deining golfge beurtenisse ontleed om die golf- en windimpak in verskillende weerstoestande te bepaal. Dit het gepaard gegaan met sensitiwiteitsontledings en simulasies van verskillende stormgedrag en strandreaksie om moontlike oplossings teen stranderosie en kusvloede te identifiseer. Daar is gevind dat die impak van storms deels akkuraat deur SBEACH voorspel is. Die model neem egter nie waaisand, profiel-aanwas en langstrandsevervoer in ag nie, alhoewel hierdie faktore ʼn beduidende effek op stranddinamika kan he. Die resultate van die veldwerk en die numeriese modellering is vergelyk en ontleed om verskillende harde en sagte struktuur oplossings aan te bied rakende die vermindering van groot erosie impakte en waaisand probleme. Op grond hiervan word 'n aanbeveling vir aksie gemaak, gevolg deur die behoefte aan toekomstige navorsingstudies, wat nodig is om die bevindinge van hierdie tesis verder te evalueer.
