A kaleidoscopic portrait of human migration in the Cape

Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This creative writing project explores the nature of human migration in the context of contemporary South Africa, specifically in the Cape, and examines how movement affects individuals' identities and the fabric of their communities. The study adopts a framework of care-full research, which prioritises the wellbeing of participants as they share their experiences of migration within, into and out of South Africa. The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on the research process and findings, as the meaning and means of migration, travel and field research changed drastically. Movement became more complicated, polarised, questioned and imperative; journeys were dictated by shifting rules, monitored regulations and controlled borders. Communities gathered in virtual spaces and social movements gained momentum online. In this almost dystopian context, the value of life writing and this particular series of stories emerged from the similarities and contrasts between individuals' experiences. As a collective, they form a portrait of shared and disparate narratives of movement, class, language, relationships, access and identity construction - beyond borders and across the board. Moreover, the collection and format investigates migration as an ever-evolving process in which individuals and communities are inevitably changed and continuously adapting. In order to stimulate this phenomenon and engage the reader, the creative writing component of the study experiments with a variety oflanguages and story-telling techniques. This ranges from plays, poems and hybrid words to integrated illustrations, collages and rearranged newspaper articles. To extract meaning and construct 'worlds' from the texts, the reader must journey through the range of stories and 'learn' the language presented on each page. The reading process thus mimics the migrant's journey insofar as both reader and migrant are immersed in new social environments and expected to adapt to, interpret and engage with that space. In this way, the project reimagines language as a means of informing and constructing shared conceptual maps of the world - particularly at a time when digital technologies facilitate conversations and connections on an unprecedented scale. The project, in its entirety, proposes that language can be a tool for understanding individual experiences, recognising patterns of social cohesion and segregation, visualising the kaleidoscope of communities and shifting the barriers of awareness.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie kreatiewe skryfprojek ondersoek die aard van menslike migrasie in die konteks van die hedendaagse Suid-Afrika, spesifiek in die Kaap, en oorweeg hoe die weefsel van mense se gemeenskappe deur migrasie beinvloed word. Die studie werk binne 'n raamwerk van sorg-same navorsing, wat die welstand van die deelnemers vooropstel soos hulle hul ervarings van migrasie binne, na en buite Suid-Afrika deel. Die COVID-19-pandemie het 'n diepgaande invloed op die navorsingsproses en bevindings gehad, aangesien die betekenis en middele van migrasie, reis- en veldnavorsing drasties verander het. Beweging het moeiliker, meer gepolariseerd, en ook meer noodsaaklik geword; die vermoe om te reis was gedikteer deur verskuiwende reels, gemonitorde regulasies en beheerde grense. In hierdie byna distopiese konteks het die waarde van lewensskryfwerk en hierdie spesifieke reeks verhale na vore gekom uit die ooreenkomste en kontraste tussen verskillende individue se ervarings. As 'n kollektiewe eenheid bied hulle beide ooreenstemmende en uiteenlopende stories oor beweging, klas, taal, verhoudings, toegangsreg en identiteitskonstruksie - buite die grense en oor die hele linie. Die versameling en formaat ondersoek boonop migrasie as 'n voortdurend-ontwikkelende proses waarin individue en gemeenskappe onvermydelik verander en deurlopend aangepas word. Om hierdie verskynsel in die voorgrond te plaas en die leser te betrek, eksperimenteer die kreatiewe skryfkomponent van die studie met 'n verskeidenheid taalvorme en vertel-tegnieke, wat wissel van dramas, gedigte en basterwoorde tot geintegreerde illustrasies, collages en herrangskikte koerantartikels. Om betekenis te maak van en 'werelde' uit die tekste te konstrueer, moet die leser deur die reeks verhale reis en die taal wat op elke bladsy aangebied word, 'leer'. Die leesproses boots dus die reis van die migrant na, in soverre beide die leser en die immigrant in nuwe sosiale omgewings verdiep word en dit van beide verwag word om aan te pas by nuwe ruimtes, hulle te interpreteer en by hulle betrokke te raak. Op hierdie manier beskou die projek taal as 'n manier om gedeelde konseptuele kaarte van die wereld in te lig en te konstrueer - veral in 'n tyd waarin digitale tegnologiee gesprekke en verbindings op ongekende skaal vergemaklik. Die projek stel in sy geheel voor dat taal kan funksioneer om individuele ervarings te verstaan, om patrone van sosiale kohesie en segregasie te herken, om die kaleidoskoop van gemeenskappe te visualiseer, en om die limiete van bewustheid te verskuif.
