- ItemFireforce - One man's war in the Rhodesian Light Infantry(Open Journal Systems, 1998) Van der Waag-Cowling, N."They have the faces of boys but they fight like lions" The history of the Rhodesian Light Infantry is an illustrious one. The RLI produced many of the senior brass who led the Rhodesian Army including Gen Peter Walls. It was arguably Rhodesia's premier fighting unit (if one excludes Rhodesia's two special forces outfits, the Special Air Service and the Selous Scouts). The spirit of the RLI runs deep in Rhodesian military lore, it was to all intents and purposes a unique Regiment. The RLI was a regular unit, which absorbed many young conscripts. It was also one of the Rhodesian Army's premier frontline regiments alongside the Rhodesian African Rifles, the Scouts and the SAS. The fundamental difference between the RLI and these other units was that the RLI was a mixture of conscripts and regulars whereas the remaining three units made use of regular volunteers and territorials. The author of this book, Chris Cocks, was a teenage conscript in the RLI and this is his story. This book is a challenge to the straightforward writing of Military History, where so many historians choose to focus on prominent personalities and battlefield tactics. This is the story of a soldier's war - it is a gripping and bittersweet look at Army life. Cocks brings the constant thread of death to the forefront of this book. At no time does he attempt to disguise the brutality of the Bush War or hide the atrocities, which were committed by troops and guerrillas alike. The writer's own sense of doubt as to whether this was a just cause adds a further dimension to the book. Many of the young Rhodesian conscripts accepted the status quo without question, others, like Cocks were constantly plagued by the morality of a war that ultimately witnessed a society feeding upon itself.
- ItemFrom Warfare to Welfare - Human Security in a Southern African Context(Open Journal Systems, 2004) Du Plessis, I.It is encouraging to find a valuable contribution to the understanding of the complexities of human security and how it can be integrated with development programmes. This edited book of 118 pages contains an introduction by Marie Muller, one of the editors, and eight chapters with no glossary or index. Each chapter ends with a list of references. The book is the result of a series of conferences between the South African and Netherlands Pugwash groups. It is divided into two parts, the first, conceptual and general, comprises four chapters, while the latter four ‘praxis’ chapters being more applicable to the Southern African policy and governance context.
- ItemGoverning Insecurity: Democratic Control of Military and Security Establishments in Transitional Democracies(Open Journal Systems, 2004) Neethling, T.In the post-Cold War era democratic institutions have widely come to be regarded as the only legitimate forms of governance. But the longstanding legacies of military rule cast a shadow over many newly instituted democratic regimes. Moreover, the fact that many societies have experienced an erosion of order and government disintegration under the pressures of violent conflict and internal war poses some intractable obstacles or challenges to the institutionalisation of democracy and human security.
- ItemHALT! ACTION FRONT! With Long at Colenso(Open Journal Systems, 1999) Visser, G. E.South African born Darrell Hall (1928 - 1996) joined the British Army in 1946 and retired with the rank of major in 1968. During his 22-year career in the British Army he served in both the Royal Artillery and the Royal Marine Commando and saw active service in the Suez Canal and Borneo campaigns. Returning to South Africa after his retirement from the British Army, he devoted much of his time to his passion for military history. He soon became a well-known authority on the battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal and served as Chairman of the Gunners' Association, the South African Military History Society and the sub-section British War Graves of the National Monuments Council. He has written three books on the Anglo-Boer War. The first was the title under discussion, of which the first edition was published in 1991 and a second edition in 1994. His second work, entitled Long Tom, deals with the history of the famous 155mm Creusot siege guns of the Boers. His last work, The Hall handbook of the Anglo-Boer War, was published posthumously in 1999 under the editorship of Fransjohan Pretorius and Gilbert Torlage.
- ItemIf war comes tomorrow. The contours of future armed conflict(Open Journal Systems, 1998) Vreӱ, F.The concept of future war and the controversial concept of a revolution in military affairs represent concepts and an evolving debate that could easily be perceived to be a pure American concept. The fact however is that Russian thinking on military theory and practice contains a strong line of thinking and concurrent ideas on this issue. The Russians have traditionally held strong and original thoughts on military theory and practice of which the deep operations theory and their views on building their maritime power are but two examples. In this publication much of their future thinking is being articulated and expressed by general Gareev. As the author, his experiences and visions originate from a military career spanning more than fifty years. His views, theories and future perspectives are placed into context by Jacob Kipp who relates the future contours constructed by Gareev to national and international security before presentation of the original ideas of Gareev. The first chapter is a thorough introduction by the editor into the world of Russian thinking and in particular that of general Gareev. In his efforts to familiarise the reader with the author, the issues as well as the concept of a revolution in military affairs and the Russian response, Kipp sets the stage for Gareev's more abstract thoughts on future war. As a publication translated from Russian on a topic not generally well known, this introductory chapter is of much value.

- ItemPeace, Profit or Plunder: The privatization of security in war torn African societies(Open Journal Systems, 2000) Vreӱ, F.This publication is about a theme that is presently a rising issue of concern on the national security agendas of states and other bodies grappling with security issues. This concern takes place against the tendency of an increasing number of issues being dumped into the security dustbin. Privatisation of security holds both the potential to soften the security dilemmas of countries as well as to threaten the marginal security of weak states. The publication deals with both sides by pointing out the constructive as well as the destructive potential of the private security industry.
