- ItemAntjie Krog as kulturele bemiddelaar : aspekte van haar skrywerspostuur in die Lae Lande(LitNet, 2019-06-10) Viljoen, LouiseHierdie artikel ondersoek Antjie Krog se rol as kulturele bemiddelaar van Suid-Afrika en Afrikaans in die Lae Lande. Daar word gekies vir ’n betreklik ruim omskrywing van kulturele bemiddelaar as ’n persoon wat aktief is oor talige, artistieke en geografiese grense heen in komplekse veelrigtingprosesse om tussen tale en kulture te bemiddel. Krog se rol as kulturele bemiddelaar word verder nagegaan met behulp van die literêr-sosiologiese begrip postuur, wat volgens Alain Viala (2016) verwys na ’n skrywer se algemene manier van skrywer wees in ’n bepaalde omgewing. Die begrip is verder omskryf deur Jérôme Meizoz (2010) wat daarop wys dat die vorming van ’n skrywer se postuur ’n interaktiewe proses is waarby ’n verskeidenheid van rolspelers (soos uitgewers, joernaliste, kritici en biograwe) betrokke is. Hy onderskei verder tussen die rol wat ’n skrywer se diskoers (die tekstuele selfbeeld van die skrywer) en gedrag (openbare optredes, onderhoude, klere, toebehore, gedrag) speel in die vorming van ’n bepaalde postuur. Daar word ook verwys na Liesbet Korthals Altes (2010) wat Meizoz se terme aangepas het en verwys na ’n skrywer se diskursiewe etos (’n skrywer se tekste) en niediskursiewe etos (’n skrywer se optredes, gedrag, voorkoms, en so meer). In ’n poging om te bepaal wat Antjie Krog se rol as bemiddelaar in die Lae Lande is, word haar skrywerskap in drie fases verdeel waarin daar sprake is van ’n skrywerspostuur wat in die loop van tyd ’n bepaalde verandering en nuansering ondergaan as gevolg van kontekstuele faktore. Daar word geargumenteer dat Krog in die periode van 1970 tot 1995 die postuur van dissidente en transgressiewe skrywer aanneem, in die periode 1995 tot 2000 die postuur van medepligtige skrywer, openbare intellektueel en podiumkunstenaar, en in die periode 2000 tot 2018 die postuur van interverbonde skrywer wat steeds aktief is as openbare intellektueel en podiumkunstenaar. Aan die hand van hierdie indeling word daar ’n oorsig gegee van Krog se bemiddelingspraktyke in die Lae Lande en op bepaalde eienskappe en ontwikkelings gewys. Daar word ook beklemtoon dat die begrip postuur ’n betreklik beskeie literêre werktuig is met ’n beperkte nut en dat die inneem van ’n bepaalde postuur nie noodwendig ’n berekende proses is nie, maar dikwels ’n organiese ontwikkeling wat met veranderende kontekste verband hou.
- ItemAntjie Krog’s Mede-wete/Synapse as a challenge to new ways of comparative reading(AOSIS Publishing, 2016-07-21) Viljoen, LouiseThis article reads Antjie Krog’s volume of poetry Mede-wete and its English version Synapse (both published in 2014) against the background of Rebecca Walkowitz’s proposal that the future of comparative literature will entail what she calls ‘foreign reading’. In her contribution to the American Association of Comparative Literature’s 2015 report on the state of the discipline of comparative literature (http://stateofthediscipline.acla.org) Walkowitz argues that literary texts increasingly enter the world in different languages and that this requires readings that move away from the idea that literary texts ‘belong’ to a single language, that explore the diverse ways in which they are read in different languages and that acknowledges that literary texts exist in the space created by a language’s relationship to other languages. This article takes Walkowitz’s observations as the vantage point for a discussion of the ways in which Krog’s volume (1) foreignises the Afrikaans language in order to become part of an interconnected whole; (2) urges readers, critics and literary practitioners to move beyond the confines of language-based literary systems; and (3) forces them to engage in a variety of different readings, including partial readings and collaborative readings, in order to become embedded in a larger community.

- ItemBreyten en die vaders : perspektiewe op die rol van die vader in Breytenbach se vroee poesie(Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging, 2003) Viljoen, LouiseThis article discusses the way in which the relationship between father and son is portrayed in Breyten Breytenbach's early poetry. It focuses on the way in which Breytenbach's poetry continues the representation of the relationship of the son with his biological father in the Afrikaans farm novels of the twenties and thirties as well as the depiction of the relationship between the rebellious son and God the Father in the work of the Afrikaans poets of the thirties (especially Van Wyk Louw and W.E.G. Louw). The article examines the way in which Breytenbach intensifies the portrayal of the relationship between father and son in his poems and places it in the political context of apartheid. Four poems are discussed: the first focuses on the relationship between the son and his biological father, the second on the relationship between the son and his poetic father or precursor, the third on the relationship between the son and God the Father, and the fourth on the relationship between the son and the political father.
- ItemThe contestation and renegotiation of gendered space in Afrikaans women's poetry(Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging, 2001) Viljoen, LouiseThis article argues that literature is one of the fields in which the social construction of space takes place; it is therefore also the terrain on which the contestation and renegotiation of gendered space can take place. The focus falls on the work of four Afrikaans women poets who either published their first volume of poetry or made a comeback after a prolonged silence in 1970: Sheila Cussons, Wilma Stockenström, Antjie Krog and Ina Rousseau. Although women are still under-represented in Afrikaans poetry in comparison to men, the quality and influence of the poetry written by these four women have given them a very important place in the Afrikaans literary system. This article concentrates on the way in which the meaning of traditionally gendered spaces is contested and renegotiated in the poetry by these women. Concentrating on the tendency to gender public spaces as male and private spaces as female, the article discusses several strategies used by these poets to undermine the way in which gender stereotypes are perpetuated through spatial arrangements – strategies like valorising the domestic as subject matter.

- ItemDie digter as reisiger : twee gedigsiklusse van Leipoldt en Krog(Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging, 2003) Viljoen, LouiseThis article focuses on the genre of travel literature, more specifically on two cycles of Afrikaans poems about travelling. The first is a cycle of poems, "Uit my Oosterse dagboek", by C. Louis Leipoldt, published in the volume Uit drie wêrelddele (1923), and the second is a cycle of poems by Antjie Krog, "van litteken tot rivier", published in the volume Kleur kom nooit alleen nie (2000). Both of these cycles are based on real travel experiences on which the poets also reported in non-fictional texts. The article explores the relationship between the non-fictional and the poetic texts, but also looks into the way in which the experience of travel leads to an intensified form of "making strange" (to quote the Russian Formalist, Sklovsky). Attention is also given to the way in which these poetic texts about travelling demonstrate the way in which travel can lead to self-discovery. Because travel leads to a crossing of boundaries in the literal as well as the figurative sense, travel writing is potentially transgressive. According to Barthes, travel writing is also the most "ideologically saturated" form of writing one can find, apart from propaganda. For this reason travel writing often forms an important part of the political and ideological debates of the time. This article discusses the way in which the cycles of poetry by Leipoldt and Krog reflect the way in which they think about their relationships with themselves, their country of birth as well as about their sense of a South African identity within a larger context.
- ItemDigterlike gesprekke met Van Wyk Louw(Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, 2008-09) Viljoen, LouiseAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die belangrikheid van ’n skrywer binne ’n bepaalde literêre veld kan afgelees word uit ’n diachroniese beeld wat bepaal word deur sy of haar verteenwoordiging in literatuurgeskiedenisse en ’n sinchroniese beeld wat afgelei kan word uit die distribusie van ’n skrywer se werk, die aktuele bestaan daarvan in akademiese onderrig, navorsing, publikasies, akademiese byeenkomste, die media en algemene publikasies sowel as die produktiewe bestaan daarvan in onderhoude en manifeste, poëtikale uitsprake, vertalings, verwerkings, intertekstualiteit en sitering. In hierdie artikel word daar ondersoek ingestel na die status van die digter N.P. van Wyk Louw aan die hand van die wyse waarop sy werk ’n voortgesette bestaan het deur intertekstualiteit en sitering in die werk van ander Afrikaanse digters. Naas ’n bepaalde opvatting van die begrip intertekstualiteit word daar gebruik gemaak van Lefevere se begrip herskrywing. Laasgenoemde word aangepas om te verwys na dié gedigte waarin digters ’n intertekstuele gesprek aanknoop met ’n voorganger soos Louw as ’n vorm van herskrywing wat verwant is aan literêre kritiek. Die ondersoek het byna ’n honderdtal gedigte deur ander Afrikaanse digters opgelewer waarin hulle gesprek voer met voorbeelde uit Louw se poësie. In die proses is verskillende soorte herskrywings of gesprekke geïdentifiseer wat geïllustreer word deur die bespreking van voorbeelde: kritiese herskrywings, siterings, parodieë, prikkels, huldigings, takserings, kommentare en versbiografieë. Die artikel kom tot die konklusie dat Louw steeds ’n baie sterk teenwoordigheid is in daardie segment van die Afrikaanse literêre veld verteenwoordig deur digter-herskrywers. Uit die bespreekte voorbeelde blyk dit dat die gedigte wat ander digters uitnooi of dwing om te reageer, dié is waarin daar sprake is van ’n sekere onbepaaldheid van betekenis en ’n konfronterende stelligheid.
- ItemIntertalige en kruiskulturele verkeer tussen Afrikaans en Nederlands in Marlene van Niekerk se verhaalbundel Die sneeuslaper(LitNet, 2016-05-11) Viljoen, LouiseVerskeie lesers het kommentaar gelewer op die wyse waarop die gebruik van Afrikaans in Marlene van Niekerk se verhaalbundel Die sneeuslaper deur ander tale, veral Nederlands, “geperforeer” of “geïnfiltreer” is. In hierdie artikel word daar aandag gegee aan die intertalige en kruiskulturele verkeer tussen Afrikaans en Nederlands in hierdie bundel, spesifiek in die verhaal “Die sneeuslaper”. Dit word gedoen aan die hand van Waïl Hassan (2006) se insigte oor die “translational text” en Rebecca Walkowitz (2015) se werk oor tekste wat volgens haar “in vertaling” gebore is (born translated). Die artikel ondersoek die wyse waarop Afrikaans in die verhaal “Die sneeuslaper” geperforeer word deur Nederlands en die wyse waarop ’n Suid-Afrikaanse leefwêreld die Nederlandse verhaalruimte in hierdie verhaal infiltreer. Hierdie eienskap van die verhaal word in verband gebring met die figuur van die sneeuslaper wat geïnterpreteer word aan die hand van Marlene van Niekerk se opvattings oor die rol van die skrywer en die literêre teks, soos uiteengesit in onderhoude, toesprake, lesings en die artikel “The literary text in turbulent times: an instrument of social cohesion or an eruption of ‘critical bliss’. Notes on J.M. Coetzee’s Life and times of Michael K” wat in 2013 in Acta Academica verskyn het.
- ItemKan die slaaf praat? Die stem van die slaaf in enkele Brink-romans(Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging, 2002) Viljoen, LouiseThis article focuses on the representation of slaves in André Brink's novels, taking as a point of departure Gayatri Spivak's article "Can the Subaltern speak?". Spivak reflects on the situation of the postcolonial intellectual who presumes to give voice to those excluded from conventional historiography. Slaves can be considered 'voiceless', either because there exist very few ego-documents in which they expressed themselves in writing, or because their subjectivity was negated, or else what they said was not accepted or deemed worthwhile; they either had no political voice or their history and stories were not always considered important enough to be recorded. The writer who tries to represent slaves in his writing therefore has to contend with the problem of "masquerading as the absent non-representer who lets the oppressed speak for themselves" (to quote Spivak). The danger also exists that giving voice to the voiceless and speaking on behalf of the voiceless could be seen as a renewed attempt to exert a form of authority over them and to appropriate their voices for personal gain. The article discusses the narrative strategies that Brink employs in the representation of slave and indigenous characters in the novels 'n Oomblik in die wind (1975), Houd-den-bek (1982), Inteendeel (1993) and Donkermaan (2000).
- Item"Die kleur van mens" : Antjie Krog se Kleur kom nooit alleen nie (2000) en die rekonstruksie van identiteit in post-apartheid Suid-Afrika(Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging, 2002) Viljoen, LouiseThis article discusses the way in which Antjie Krog reconstructs her personal as well as collective identity in the volume of poetry Kleur kom nooit alleen nie (2000) by considering the role of landscape, language and race in the construction of identity. The discussion firstly focuses on the poet's use of other voices than her own in the text in order to establish a dialogue (in the Bakhtinian sense) with other inhabitants of South Africa as well as the African continent, something which can be seen as a prerequisite for transformation and the reconstruction of identity in post-apartheid South Africa. The article then goes on to consider the poet's criticism of the trade taking place at the "new barcounter of identities" in the poem "ai tog!", as well as the importance of landscapes and a language that can be defined in terms of a common humanity and vulnerability in the poet's sense of being South African. This is followed by a discussion of the deconstruction of race as a basis for African identity in the poems discussing skin, colour and race. The final section of the article discusses the poet's use of the metaphor of the Niger river with its many mouths to describe the diversity of African identity, as well as refers to her sense of homecoming in Africa.
- Item"'n Postkoloniale Umweltkas" : die vraag na 'n transnasionale poetika in Afrikaans aan die hand van Marlene van Niekerk se Kaar(LitNet, 2017) Viljoen, LouiseIn hierdie artikel word daar ondersoek ingestel na die vraag of daar in die geval van Afrikaanse digters en ’n lokaal-geplaaste minderheidstaal soos Afrikaans gepraat kan word van ’n transnasionale poëtika. Die begrip word aan die orde gestel aan die hand van Jahan Ramazani se boek A transnational poetics en die kommentaar en kritiek wat daarop gevolg het. Die rol wat die transnasionale proses van kolonisering gespeel het in die verspreiding van moderniteit en modernisme word bespreek met verwysing na die werk van Dilip Gaonkar en Susan Stanford Friedman voordat daar oorgegaan word na die bespreking van Marlene van Niekerk se digbundel Kaar as toetsgeval. Van Niekerk se poëtikale opvattings en die posisie van Afrikaans as minderheidstaal met transnasionale wortels word bespreek. Hierna volg ’n ontleding van vier gedigte uit Kaar, naamlik “Heavy metal in Bagdad”, “Etologie”, “Sorry suide” en “Teorie en praktyk van die digkuns in ’n era van aardgas”, met die doel om vas te stel watter rol faktore soos die spanning tussen die globale noorde en suide, Suid-Afrika se koloniale geskiedenis en daaropvolgende postkolonialiteit, die verhouding tussen die lokale en die globale en die impak van globale kapitalisme op die omgewing speel in die digter se siening van haar taak en verantwoordelikheid in die epog wat die Antroposeen genoem word.
- Item’n Retoriese anaiise van die vyf lykdigte in T.T. Cloete se Allotroop(AOSIS Publishing, 1995-11) Viljoen, LouiseThis article works from the premise that these poems form part of a tradition that can he traced back to the funerary poetry of the Dutch Renaissance and from there to the funeral orations of Classical times. After referring to the current revival of interest in rhetoric, attention is given to the role which rhetoric played in Renaissance poetics and the influence it had on the practice o f writing funerary poetry. The funerary poems in Cloete's Allotroop are then analysed, making use of the Renaissance descriptions of and prescriptions for funerary poetry researched by S.F. Witstein in Funeraire poëzie in de Nederlandse Renaissance. These analyses prove that Cloete’s poems make use of the elements basic to the Renaissance funerary poem and the classical funeral oration namely praise (laus), mourning (luctus) and consolation (consolatio) and that the rhetorical terminology devised centuries ago can still be useful in the reading of these poems.
- Item“A white fly on the sombre window pane” : the construction of Africa and identity in Breyten Breytenbach’s poetry(AOSIS Publishing, 2001-08) Viljoen, Louise“A white fly on the sombre window pane”: The construction of Africa and identity in Breyten Breytenbach’s poetry This article explores the way in which the construction of Africa interacts with the construction of identity in the poetry written by Breyten Breytenbach. On the one hand, Breytenbach’s use of the name Jan Afrika, his attempts to emphasise the African-ness of the language Afrikaans as well as the construct Afrikaner indicate a desire to locate his origins in Africa and fix his identity in relation to Africa; on the other hand, it is clear that he constantly problematises the idea of a stable identity. Imposing a narrative on Breytenbach’s poetic oeuvre, it becomes clear that the ‘story’ of his poetry coincides with the order of events in his personal life and that his construction of Africa interacts with and determines the construction of his own identity. In conclusion it becomes clear that Breytenbach locates himself against the background of Africa from which he derives his sense of self, but at the same time takes the position of the nomad, exile, migrant or outsider because it provides him with a unique perspective and the possibilities of transgression and renewal.
