Faculty of Education. Dept. of Sport Science.ENGLISH SUMMARY: The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of a short (weekend) adventure experience on the self-concept of boys from different socio-economic backgrounds. It is predicted that the short adventure experience will have a positive effect on the self-concept of the boys. It is also predicted that the short adventure experience will have a greater influence on the low socio-economic group than on the high socioeconomic group. The sample for this study consisted out of 33 boys from two schools: Caravelle Primary (low socio-economic) and Eikestad Primary (high socio-economic) who took part in the two short camps presented to them. The self-concept was tested just before, directly after, one week and one month after the camp with the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (Piers, 1984). The results show that only the boys from the high socio-economic background showed a positive change in the self-concept after the short adventure experience. The boys from a low socio-economic environment did not show a significant change in the total self-concept, but there were improvements in some of the cluster scales.
