E.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Education. Dept. of Curriculum Studies.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Three decades ago, the language laboratory was enthusiastically received by second language teachers throughout the world. Originally regarded as an effective means of promoting language learning according to behaviouristic theory, the laboratory is still regarded by many as a sophisticated drilling machine. The principles of audio-lingualism have now been discredited by most linguists, and with the shift to communicative language teaching, the laboratory runs the risk of falling into disuse. Experiments with new material may determine whether the language laboratory still has a role to play in second language acquisition in the eighties.
