- Item’n Stelselbenadering tot die Ontwerp en Ontleding van Prosesse vir Klankproduksie(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2016-12) Roux, Gerhard Wachtendonck; Roosenschoon, Hans; Stellenbosch University. Dept. of MusicENGLISH ABSTRACT: In creative sociotechnical systems such as audio production the primary challenge is managing a large number of complex interconnected variables. A systems approach, named Interactive Production (¡P), was developed through an extensive action research project that spanned multiple album and film score productions. The goal of ¡P is to empower technicians to gauge and regulate the huge amount of variables in production systems. This is achieved through a synthesis of approaches employed in automotive manufacturing and software development that makes use of sociotechnical design and feedback to make systems more reactive. ¡P moves away from the widely held notion that the answer to quality in audio production lies in the tools and equipment and rather follows an approach where systems are designed where processes can gain the maximum contribution from both humans and machines. It was found that the traditional functional division in audio production is not suitable in a new paradigm of production characterised by cloud collaboration and scalable projects. Where functional division was replaced by ¡P’s flow processes it was found that the reactivity afforded by this approach had a positive impact on the system’s ability to deliver quality as well as dealing with uncertainty.
