Geography & Environmental Studies.ENGLISH SUMMARY: Although South-Africa has a democratic government since 1994, great challenges exist in addressing disparities and pressing unemployment issues. Local economic development (LED) is a relatively new term in South-Africa and therefore difficulties still exist in the implementation of LED development strategies, although there are cases where LED has in fact been implemented successfully. National government made municipalities responsible for the implementation of LED strategies. The way in which municipalities implement LED strategies and also whether the ingredients exist to implement LED successfully, can be questioned because of a lack of capacity in the community and the lack of financial capacity in the local governments which sometimes exist. The LED strategy to development can work. It is therefore important to learn from our mistakes. Only then can maximal advantage be taken of the advantages that LED offers. In this study the different approaches towards LED is examined, but more importantly an evaluation is made of how LED is currently functioning on the local level. A few case studies within the Cape Metropolitan Area were investigated and from this certain conclusions were reached. The conclusion is made that the process that is being used to formulate LED policies and projects, is acceptable. A variety of problems are identified when it comes to the way in which LED policies and projects are implemented. It is important to identify these problems, because only then solutions to these problems can be formulated.
