    ENGLISH SUMMARY: This document evaluates the Anglisation policy of the ANC-government since 1994. After 1994 Afrikaans lost it's privileged status of the apartheid years to become one of eleven official languages of South Africa. Although the official status of all eleven languages are entrenched in the constitution, English are in practice becoming the lingua franca of the government to the detriment of the Afrikaans language. This supplanting of Afrikaans by English shows a marked resemblance to Somerset's Anglisation policy during the second British rule (1806). The policy of Anglisation was an attempt to sever all links with the previous Dutch rule at the Cape. It aimed to obliterate the Dutch culture by Anglicizing the schools, the judiciary and the church. This in turn gave rise to Afrikaner nationalism and the creation of Afrikaans literature. After the formation of the ANC-government in 1994 Afrikaans was downscaled due to its links with the previous apartheid government. Similar to the second British rule, Afrikaans is substituted by English in the government services and public life. This document looks at the Anglisation policy of the ANC-government and the downscaling of Afrikaans after 1994; it's influence on the development of the Afrikaans language and a comparison between the two Anglisation periods. A special emphasis is placed on the survival qualities of Afrikaans and it's metamorphosis from the language of the oppressor to that of a language of reconciliation and inclusiveness.
