- ItemDie begin in die kortverhaal(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1992-03) Bloemhof, Francois; Smuts, J. P. (Johannes Pieter); Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Afrikaans and Dutch.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An historical approach is useful in a study of the role of beginnings in short stories. It shows that there is a big difference between what Edgar Allan Poe, the short story's first critical theorist, called the prose tale, and a postmodernistic example like Harry Kalmer's "Die nag steek op soos 'n seer tand". Through the years diverse aspects regarding the short story have been studied, including those concerning beginning strategies, narrative directions and narrative modes. As the theories were refined, the tendency increased to apply criteria and rules. In contrast to this stringency, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov believed that classification in the short story isn't possible.
