- ItemD.F. Malan en die hoer kritiek(Stellenbosch University, 2013) Brummer, VincentThe primary aim of this paper is to bring to light an important unpublished paper from 1910 by Dr DF Malan on the so-called Higher Criticism. My paper throws light on Malan’s own theological position as pupil of the Dutch Ethical theologian JJP Valeton. In the first part of my paper I try to explain the issues concerning Higher Criticism and to recount the context in which the paper was written. The second part of my paper contains the original (Dutch) text of Malan’s paper. The final part consists of an annotated bibliography of the debate about Higher Criticism in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa during the first three decades of the 20th century. This serves to situate Malan’s position within the context of the Dutch Reformed Church.
- ItemEscaping from the ghetto(AOSIS Publishing, 2012) Brummer, Vincent‘Revealed theology’ claims that religious belief derives from divine revelation and can only be justified in the light of such revelation. This entails a retreat into an intellectual ghetto: Only believers can participate in this kind of theology because only believers have access to divine revelation. The usual alternative to revealed theology is ‘natural theology’, which tries to prove the truth of (Christian) faith in the light of the universally accessible criteria of reason and experience. It is argued that natural theology fails to provide such proof and therefore cannot liberate theology from the intellectual ghetto of revealed theology. This paper argues for a ‘philosophical theology’ which analyses the meaning of (Christian) doctrine rather than proving its truth. Since the methods and criteria of this analysis are universally acceptable and not reserved for believers, this form of theology liberates believers from the intellectual ghetto of revealed theology.
- ItemSpirituality and the hermeneutics of faith(AOSIS Publishing, 2010-11) Brummer, VincentThe first part of this essay argues that religious experience should not be viewed as an extraordinary kind of extra-sensory perception (visions, ecstasies etc) but as ‘hermeneutical’ in the sense that it entails an interpretation of our ordinary experience (including ordinary senseperception) or sometimes of particularly impressive experiences of the world and of our lives in the light of faith. The heritage of faith in a religious tradition provides believers with a framework of understanding in terms of which they can look on things with the eyes of faith. Various key features of this kind of interpretation are explained. The second part of the essay shows how various forms of spirituality are ways in which believers are trained in looking on life and the world with the eyes of faith and explains what this entails for the life of faith.
Ds. A.A. In hierdie artikel word hierdie “Bekommerd”-debat bespreek.
Ds. A.A.
